Assessment of the Family: A Nursing Priority Family Health is very important in the nursing assessment. The patient outcome and recovery depends on the family support of the patient. One way to assess a family is by using Gordon’s Health Patterns. Gordon’s functional health patterns provide a holistic model for assessment of family because assessment data are classified under eleven headings: Health Perception and Health Management, Nutritional-Metabolic, Elimination, Activity and Exercise, Sleep and Rest, Cognition and Perception, Self-Perception and Self- Concept, Roles and Relationships, …show more content…
Sexually and Reproduction, Coping and Stress Tolerance, Values and Beliefs. This paper will focus on the functions of family who was interviewed using Gordon’s Health Patterns and will identify the risks and improve health of the family. Two nursing diagnosis will be utilized for the positive outcome of the family.
The Family This is a middle class Hispanic family who live in a small community in the state of Arizona. The family consists of a Mother, Father and three young girls ages ; an 18 year old daughter, 15 year old high school sophomore and 12 year old 6th grader. The family will be assessed by Gordon’s Health Patterns in each category.
Health Perception and Health Management The mother describes her health and her family as well. The mother takes several steps to ensure the family is in good health. She schedules their preventive appointments and dentist appointments regularly. The mother believes that having a good health insurance and coverage is the most important for her family. The husband has chronic back problems and is currently visiting a specialist once every six months. The mother quickly takes her daughters to the doctor if she suspects any abnormalities.
Nutrition-Metabolic
The family has a good nutrition or at least tries to accomplish good nutrition habits. One of the main goals of the family is to eat healthy. The family is always on the go because her daughters are always playing sports. They don’t always have the time to prepare healthy meals. The mother tries to pack her kids healthy snack so they eat during their breaks. The mother tries to cook a special dinner at least three times a week just to spend time with the family and their activities.
Elimination
The mother reports that the family’s pattern of elimination is normal. All the family members do have normal elimination patterns. All of the daughters were potty trained at a normal age. The mother reports that none of the family members have urinary problems or bowel problems, or skin problems. The family does not have problems with constipation and if they do they use more fiber in the diet and prune juice.
Activity and Exercise The family does many sports.
The middle and smaller daughters are involved in cheerleading. The oldest daughter plays softball for the college she attends. All of the daughters have been involved in sports since they were small. The mother encourages all of her daughters to play sports. The family does not suffer any cardiac or muscle-skeletal system. As a family the mother reports they all go walking in the afternoon during the summer months.
Sleep and Rest Pattern The mother reports they do not have a scheduled sleeping pattern. The parents and the children go to sleep in any order and late. The children arrive home late from the practices and start doing their homework or their chores and they finish late. Usually the mother goes to sleep early and the daughters are left to finish their activities. The mother goes to sleep earlier because she goes to work early in the morning and so does the father. Usually the mother sets the hour limiting that all the children should be in bed by eleven o’clock. The mother reports that they feel rested and relaxed.

Pattern The husband and wife have a normal traditional marriage. Both of them take into consideration the opinions and decisions of the couple. At times the mother is the one who makes the decisions of the family. The husband agrees with her in almost anything and they try to not argue a lot in front of the children. None of the children have learning disability. Both parents have an Associate’s degree. They made a mandatory rule at their house that all of their children will attend college. They expect good grades from all of their children A’s and B’s. They believe a good education is the most important thing in life.
Self-Concept & Self Perception The mother reports herself as a attractive woman. She views herself as an intelligent and attractive woman. She feels happy with herself. She has no abnormalities. She feels happy as to what she has accomplish with her family.
Roles and Relationships The mother describes herself as a good wife, mother, sister and daughter.
She has her own mother as a positive role model. The most important role she is playing right now is that of a good mother. She nurtures and cares for her family. The family is a traditional Hispanic family. Both of the parents work long shifts. The older daughter is expected to do chores and supervision the younger siblings until they get home. The mother sometimes gets flustered when none of the girls help out with the home chores. She reports that the daughters don’t have excuses they have plenty of time to do it. The mother also reports that when she is at home the daughters are not content that her mother is there because she has them cleaning and helping her out with the
chores.
Sexually and Reproductive This couple has been married for 20 years. The mother reports they have good communication skills. They have the same goals, visions and expectations in life. The mother s 44 years old and so is the husband. The father did a vasectomy after the third daughter was born. The mother reports that they have a conflict at times when the husband has to care for his aging parents because he is the only son they have in town. The mother is trying to understand him more and tries not to create a conflict.
Coping and Stress Tolerance
