According to an article titled, Fear Similarly Alters Perceptual Estimates of and Actions over Gaps Guess, MacCardell, Stefanucci write, “ Heights are estimated as taller when more afraid” (2). This shows that fear creates more reason to be scared than there actually is. In “Introduction” to On Monsters, Stephen T. Asma writes, “If we find monsters in our world, it is sometimes because they are really there and sometimes because we have brought them with us” (14). Both show that fear is sometimes there when it shouldn’t be. We always focus on the worst possible scenarios.…
Fear can either paralyze people-or wake them up. Essentially, it keeps us safe and drives us to survive. Fear makes us more conscious and strengthens our instincts. However, fear can cause crippling anxiety. Not allowing any enjoyment out of the bounds of what is perceived as “safe”. Fear can also cause obsession, hallucinations, and fits of constant paranoia. Edgar Allan Poe uses objects that each character obsesses over to induce fear. Though each character subjected to Poe’s devices react differently they are all connected through irony, symbolism, and theme.…
Fear is to be afraid of someone or something, as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening. These first two examples are from “The Tell-Tale Heart”. The story explains how the old man woke up and is aware of a presence in his room; and then, out of fear he lets out a deep and fearful moan. The story explains how the narrator opens the lantern and saw the old man’s vulture eye, then out of hatred and fear of the eye he runs and kills the old man. This last and final example comes from the “The Monkey’s Paw”, the story tells how Mr.White wishes back his dead son, and as soon as he does there comes a banging at the front door which causes the house to…
Fear is referred to the feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger, thus terror is the intense, overpowering fear (The free dictionary). Fear can be rational or legitimate which makes people susceptible towards it. This is referred to Edgar Allan Poe, as he is one of those writers who try to terrify us about what is out there all the while making us aware of the terror within. He was a gothic writer that introduced detective stories. This style of writing may be due to Poe’s personal experience as a child and as an adult. Other stories that hinder on this idea is the short story “Terrors of the Modern-All Souls” by Jacqueline Wilson-Jordan, refers to terror in the exterior and also interior, “Chronicles a middle-aged woman’s thirty-six hour odyssey of terror as she limps alone through her New England mansion, searching in vain for her missing servants and any sign of life”(Wilson-Jordon 66). This quote refers to the fear that the women has, as she is afraid of death personally and how the exterior cannot really protect her. This includes her wealth or her servants. This idea is also emphasized through the short story “The breath of the devils: Memories and Places of an experience of Terror” as it examines how an indigenous group of the Argentine Chaco re-members…
Fear is an emotional response caused by a perceived threat. Fear begins with the upsetting response. Feeling fear is human. Fear reminds us of the late nights at your house by yourself and hearing strange noises or the ghosts and hauntings. Maybe it's as simple as giving a presentation. A time I experienced fear is when I went to my first lacrosse game. The whole ride there I was thinking What if I don’t score a goal and What if I don’t catch the ball? And when I entered the game, I was so nervous. I played in the 2nd quarter and realized that people were dropping the ball and not scoring goals. So when I got out on that field, I wasn’t as nervous.…

I suppose you are wondering why I am speaking of fear as an educational topic. To begin we will have to take a trip back in time. August of 2003 was an exciting and fearful time in my life. The months to come would be uncertain and frightful. My, now, husband was graduating high school and our future was coming at us fast. I was certain in my career path of nursing. My husband, on the other hand, was undecided. We had already been together for two years. I knew I would marry that man. We were planning our lives together at the young ages 18 and 20.…
