Fear In Middle School
Throughout lower school, and much of middle school, I had one looming fear. This fear ate me alive. The knowledge that at one point during my school career, I would have to endure a substitute teacher completely consumed me with a fear that rocked me to my very core. I can remember physically wincing when I opened the classroom door, and saw writing on the board that explained my teacher’s absence. I wasn’t fearful of a change in teaching styles, or the possibility that the new teacher would be absolutely dreadful, instead, I was deathly afraid of roll call.
By the time third grade rolled around, I was able to predict an impending wavier in my substitute teacher’s voice, as well as a definite furrowing of their brow when it was time to call

Growing up in the church starting at a very young age was most definitely a blessing but also a curse. I always loved going to bible class when I was in preschool and elementary school but during the beginning of middle school, I had a change of heart. I didn’t have the same fire burning in me that I once did. I didn’t truly know what it meant to be a christian and everyone noticed my sudden change.…

In chapter two, the Student Fear Factor, from Rebecca Cox book the College Fear Factor, she explores how students’ fears effect their success and how students use fear management strategies to overcome these fears. Cox examines the anxiety students have about transitioning from high school to college. She notices that the autonomy when transitioning into adulthood provokes anxiety in some students having to do with new responsibilities all on their own. In relation to college, she notes “the stress of assuming the responsibilities of college” where students are unaware of the college expectation. Rebecca correlates this stress to a lack of “college knowledge”, meaning that students are uncertain about course requirements, classwork and classes.…

“I ain’t no lame” was the response the social worker continued to receive as she met with a young man about his grades and classroom behavior. Andre (name changed for privacy reasons) is a star basketball player at a local high school, but receives services at the Burke Mental Health Center due to the fact his low grades limit his eligibility to shine on court. He entered the room hesitantly, but opened up more as the session continued. When various ways of improving his behaviors and grades were discussed he informed the provider that the suggestions she gave, if adopted, would only set him out for ridicule. Andre felt that increasing his grades and behaviors would make him a social outcast, but that not doing so would prevent him from fulfilling his dream of going to college on a basketball scholarship. He seemed stuck between facing negative outcomes if he was successful in school and facing other negative outcomes if he was not successful in school. Andre, an African American 16 years old male, is not alone in his academic struggles. Currently, there are… (cite). I watched the documentary called Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary. The filmmaker named Laura Simon, was born in Mexico and her family immigrated to America when she was six. She began her career working for a non-profit organization that dealt with immigrant rights and education. Her personal odyssey and involvement with dilemmas of her students led her to the making of Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary. During 1994, California voters sanctioned Proposition 187, which denies public education and health care to all undocumented immigrants.…

There have been quite a few films that we were assigned to watch for this class. The one film that stood out to me the most, I would have to say is “Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary.” Everybody should have the ability to go to school, especially children, regardless of the fact that they are illegal immigrants. People come to America in hopes of a better lifestyle not only for themselves but their family as well. This film focuses on Prop 187, which denies illegal aliens from receiving public services in California, and how it impacted the lives of many illegal immigrants as well as crushed their hopes and dreams for a successful future.…

I observed Mrs. Collier’s first grade class at J.B. Hunt elementary on Thursday September 13, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated nicely. She had bright posters hanging on the wall as well as many colorful boxes, curtains, and chairs around the room. The desks were set up in one giant “U” with Mrs. Collier sitting in the middle. It was a great set up for the kids because they could easily see her and she could easily see them. The dynamics in the classroom seemed great because she connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. The students behavior seemed very respectful towards her and they listened when she asked them to do something. Mrs. Collier’s equity between her and her students was…

There is a typical sermon of the Great Awakening, emphasizing the belief that Hell is a real place. Jonathan Edwards, the author of Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God hoped that the imagery and message of his sermon would awaken his audience to the horrific reality that awaited them should they continue without Christ. The underlying point is that God has given humanity a chance to rectify their sins. Edwards says that it is the will of God that keeps wicked men from the depths of Hell. This act of restraint has given humanity a chance to mend their ways and return to Christ. Fear is a strong tool to use when persuading people and trying to get what you want. Just as if a murderer held a gun to someone’s head, that person would be submissive to the murderer, Jonathan Edwards and characters in The Crucible install fear into people to achieve certain goals. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God uses fear for good and to help people, while The Crucible uses it for both good and as an evil way to manipulate people. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is a sermon preached by Jonathan Edwards. He tries to scare the congregation in order to save them from going to Hell.…

I thought it was going to be a normal day in first grade.. Boy was I wrong! We were learning about different plants and animals. And of course, insects. At the time, I went to an elementary school called Thunder Mountain Elementary, in Grand Junction. We were sitting in groups and the lights were off with the projector on. If I remember correctly, we were also taking notes. Our teacher, Ms. White was, well, teaching us. That’s kinda what teachers do. Maybe teachers do other things we aren’t aware of.. Nah. In second grade, teachers were like, Einstein and the smartest of mentors, not saying that people still don’t think that now. Teachers are awesome and have some of the best or worst stories to tell. But, before today, I didn’t really mind…

As I went to all my classes I met new people. I started to make more and more friends as the day went on. I learned a lot from the teachers like I had to have all of my materials with me at all times. Pencils, pens, a novel, and the supplies need for class. “It’s too much for me to remember! I hate it!” my friend told me once in the hallway. “It’s not like it’s harmful, it makes us more responsible. I like it to be honest.” I answered her. I learned the rules for every class and tried to remember it all. I learned to walk to the right in the hallways at all times, to make sure I have a pencil case with at least three pencils, there is a lot more but I want to keep this story rolling! The teachers have to be treated with plenty of respect. They have so many kids in every class. It’s hard for them to keep up with everyone and they need to keep an eye out for some of the kids. Each and every class is magnificent and I’m sad as a hungry grasshopper to think that I’ll be leaving their classes and start 7th…

Unsurprisingly, when I found out Mrs. Walker was going to be my biology teacher for my sophomore year, I panicked. My older sister, Lauren, had been taught by Mrs. Walker and told me exceedingly overstated stories, and me being extremely naïve little sister, I believed them. I recall myself being surprised during the first few weeks of school when I found out for…

It all started the first day of fifth grade. I tried to focus on my teacher; however, the constant thump in my head drowned out her voice. Not knowing this feeling, an emotion of fear displayed on my face. I became perplexed, yet resolute. Determined to persevere through this milestone of the first day, I shifted the focus of discomfort from me to other things in class. Having this diversion, I made it through the day.…
