The intended light-heartedness of these chalk-faced jesters turns into a disturbing experience for most. Over time, the fear of clowns has increased in the general public. Despite their joyous intent, clowns generate fear in the hearts of many. Clowns have caused mental damage to thousands of men, women, and children around the world due to scary movies and books like Stephen King’s “It”.
Clowns have been around for ages, but not all of them were called clowns. In ancient Egypt, clowns were a very prevalent feature in the Pharaoh's household. In ancient China, there was a well-known clown by the name of Yu Sze, they were the clown to Ch’in Shih Huang-ti. Ch’in Shih Huang-ti was the leader that built the wall of China. The main reasons that clowns are so scary are because of horror movies, real events, and even video games. John Wayne Gacy is one of the most infamous serial killers from the midwest. John was also known as the killer clown, due to his beastly activities. John killed 33 males in only 6 years. He would sometimes lure the unsuspecting males into his home using his alter ego Pogo the Clown. The chilling photos taken of Pogo are very disturbing. Pogo's makeup isn't the traditional clown makeup. A professional clown’s makeup is rounded, and has soft edges, Pogo's was pointed with sharp and rough edges. Another source of this preposterous fear is the movie and book ‘It’ by Stephen King. The clown in It is haunting and looks like he came straight out of a nightmare. He has an angry personality, yellowed and sharpened teeth. Even when he's smiling and holding balloons, he looks evil.
