We all know that the word fear is an emotional experience of anticipation of some pain or impending danger which automatically makes us decide either to flee or fight. But quoting the exact words of the English dictionary fear is also defined as a feeling of profound respect for someone or something. The knowledge of God is of great importance to our personal and private happiness. The fear of the lord is not meant as a servile fear, a fear of punishment of hell, wrath or damnation which is the effect of the law on our conscience, but a Godly fear, a hatred for evil (Job 28:28) and knowledge of God as a Father, of His love and grace through Christ, particularly of His forgiving love (Psalms 130:4).
Your money can be taken from you so can any belonging of yours! Happiness, family, friends, name and fame are all momentary assets! Whereas wisdom is something we gain and we keep! We look to the word of god as the source of our wisdom. Now what is wisdom? Wisdom is the ability to discern what is edifying from what is harmful, what is safe from what is dangerous. Wisdom is about a right understanding and a right application of the way things really are. The Bible says that only the word of God is the source of wisdom.
In I Kings 3:9 when Solomon was asked by the lord what he required his answer was “lord give me the wisdom to rule your great people.” And Solomon again says in proverbs 14:27 “fear of the lord is a fountain of life that one may turn away from the snares of death.” Here we see true and profound respect for the lord. Why did Solomon not ask for riches or fame but wisdom? He asked the lord for the ability to be wise, experienced and knowledgeable. His quest for wisdom and his love for the lord made
