Whilst not all adults appreciate the phenomenon of the toy fad, kids certainly do and this year it is finally the turn of the Fidget Spinner. When I say finally, I really mean finally because these super cool little gadgets were actually invented back in the 1980’s by a woman named Catherine A. Hettinger. She dreamt up the idea as a way to keep her child occupied during a period of ill-health and over the following decade refined it into its current format, finally releasing it to the market in 1993. So is Mrs Hettinger sitting comfortably now? Not in the slightest because she relinquished the patent rights in 2005 due to lack of funds. Sadly, in this case, that’s how the fidget spins!

They also come in different formats; the Fidget Roller and the Fidget Cube being just two other versions. Essentially, for operational purposes, you hold the centre, flick and the gadget spins. Well, that seems rather basic to me. I can see the attraction for small kids because they love compact colourful or glittery bits which move but can also be stuffed into a pocket. Perhaps they need them to concentrate at work because their mean mum stopped them taking their marbles and yo-yos to school back in the day.
I really believe that fads are a rite of passage for childhood; last year was loom bands and I loved those things. Looking back I was always up for a bit of a fad as a child myself; I merrily French skipped my way through playtime, almost broke my wrist with my clackers and coveted my baby sisters chopper bike beyond reason. I even soaked my conkers in vinegar overnight and baked them in the oven to get that super hard one so I could beat all the boys the next day.
There is absolutely no doubt that the Fidget Spinner craze has hit hard this year but who knows how long it will last; in a few weeks there will be heaps of them, unloved and unwanted, in the back of the drawer only to reappear in a decade or two on a TV nostalgia
