Human Immunodeficiency Virus and its transformations to AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome. It was interesting to watch the government’s involvement and how they handed the situation. It was referred as gay disease for a while by the world and called GRID. There were many cultural challenges and they also needed to discover how the disease spread, how to test for it, how to best cope with it and distinguishing what they think, what they know and what they can prove. I believe the movie is called And the Band Played
On is because Aids seemed to be this disease that no one seemed to know how to control and it kept being dragged out and made into something bigger without a stop. Having Aids is something that is very serious and even deadly. People were very uneducated and unaware of the consequences. People did not do enough to educate everyone about this. I mean they had to start from scratch and see who gave it to whom and how many people got it from the main source. They even needed to see if it was actually sexually transmitted. Some people were not even cooperative and did not want to share personal information. Considering that it hit the homosexual community it would not have been kept a secret for too long. It’s funny how when women started contracting it the CDC started working a little faster. I do believe that people deserve their privacy but I also do believe that when people’s health is at stake than the government needs to get involved. There was a line in the movie that was “When a house is on fire you don’t wait for scientific proof. You grab a hose and put it out.” I completely agree because in real life maybe when you see the flame you get scared at first and take a second to think about what to do but then you put it out as fast as you can. The CDC had vital information that could have saved lives and I disagree with them trying to hold off from telling the public. I believe this is why the movie is named And the Band Played On. The controversy did just keep going on and prolonged for a
while.
