Autism is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the brain structure or function. In many families, there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities supporting the theory that autism has a genetic basis. Some of the characteristics of an autistic child are, does not babble or coo by 12 months, does not gesture or say a single word much less can speak two word phrases by 12-24 months of age as the child grows he or she may have difficulties communicating or relating to events or people around them, they often play with toys and objects in unusual ways and have difficulty adjusting to changes to their lives such as familiar surroundings or in their daily routine. These characteristics are evident by the age of three. Radio is autistic. Radio isolates himself from other people, he is riding down a stretch of highway with not a care in the world, autistic children do not realize the danger life can bring, for instance when the officer who was not aware of who Radio was, his first thought was that Radio had stolen the gifts that he was delivering to his friends and neighbors for Christmas, Radio just thought he was giving back to his friends however the officer thought he was committing a crime. Autistic children do not have the capability of physical emotion, they have a hard time connecting with other humans when it comes to hugging, or being touched in a comforting way, when Radios mom passed away you could see that when Coach approached him to comfort him he was receptive to his embrace and wanted to be comforted. Radio had an obsession with radios, it was soothing and comforting to him, it appeared to be his “calming tool” autistic children play with objects in odd ways, they relate to either an object or a sound to comfort them when their world becomes upset or threatened.
