Unit Title: I’m Not Scared Either - An Introduction to a Sub-Titled Film.

Function: Viewing (with links to Presenting, Listening/Speaking and Transactional Writing) Processes: Exploring Language, Thinking Critically, Processing Information
Achievement Objectives:
- Analyse a visual text (film), evaluating the ways verbal and visual features are organised and combined for different meanings, effects and purposes.
Unit Learning Outcomes – By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify, analyse and evaluate the elements within the mise-en-scene, cinematography and post-production of a film in discussion and writing.
2. Analyse the central components of the film (exposition/conclusion, character/relationships, theme, narrative, genre, motif/symbol) using the above terminology correctly and with reference to visual, verbal and aural features.
3. Construct and organise a body of evidence regarding this analysis for the purpose of writing an essay.
4. Write an essay on a chosen topic that analyses the visual and verbal/aural features used for effect, meaning and purpose in “I’m Not Scared.”
5. Design a storyboard that demonstrates an awareness of cinematographic and sound effects, visual narrative and point of view and contains explanatory notes evaluating the effectiveness of the decisions made.
Rationale This film is an incredibly rich teaching resource that lends itself to enhancing the visual literacy of senior students. It has won numerous awards, including two for cinematography, and as such has great merit for teaching students about effective uses of visual techniques and film conventions. The
