Poverty in Great Britain
Introduction
Poverty is a major problem in the world; half of humanity has inadequate access to water and millions of women spend several hours per day collecting water. In developing countries poverty is an evident problem, but in industrial countries it is a troubled issue because it is difficult to define poverty in a welfare society. In this essay the relationship between poverty and social mobility in today’s Great Britain is discussed and analyzed.
Discussion
Britain is a variegated society; its history has led to religious and cultural diversity (McCormick 2012: 64). The economical division began with feudalism (McCormick 2012: 64). Today the economical division live on in a society divided by class and opportunity (McCormick 2012: 64). There is, as in most wealthy societies, a substantial income gap between different classes (McCormick 2012: 69). Even though the rich tend to remain rich, social mobility has accelerated the last decades (McCormick 2012: 68). The combination of welfare and improved education has made it possible for people to change their class identity and made the middle class bigger and more stable than in the past (McCormick 2012: 68).
Despite the fact that the quality of Britons’ lives has improved since the Second World War, Britain has among the highest poverty rates in the European Union (McCormick 2012: 69). The debates over how to define poverty and the high numbers of people who are still poor in the midst of wealth make it a problematic issue (McCormick 2012: 69). According to the government’s definition (people who are living in households with less than 60 per cent of the median national income) 16 per cent of working-age adults and 20 per cent of children were poor in 2009-2010 (McCormick 2012: 69). Single parent families and households with children are over-represented in lower incomes groups, which can be explain by the fact that having a child has become an expensive
