Finding Myself in the Service of Others I realized the world was evolving when I went on a trip to New York City with my former high school classmates. The amount of homeless people on the streets in Times Square blew my mind. It made me feel very fortunate for the life that I have. When it was time to go home, my best friend and I came up with an idea for a club at our school. We teamed up and started a club called FCCLA. It stands for Family Career and Community Leaders of America. It was a community service based club. It gave us the opportunity to volunteer in our community and help a variety of people. My experience with the club has taught me numerous life lessons and traits. These traits include empowerment, compassion, and gratitude. The first of these exceptional traits is empowerment. With empowerment, I realized that I have the ability to make someone’s life better. It has built up my self-worth beyond words. For example, our club made weekly visits to the local nursing home. We would sit with the men and women and share stories, sing songs, and eat lunch with them. It does not seem like much, but they always told us how much they appreciated us for coming. It made our club happy to know we were making them smile and changing their lives in a positive way.
The next trait that I inherited is compassion. It always hurts my heart knowing there are people who do not know where their next meal is coming from or where they will be sleeping that night. This gave me the idea to sign my club up to volunteer to help, specifically at the local soup kitchen. We arrived early to cook the food. Later that day, people of all ages came piling into the building. The amount of men, women, and children that were there overwhelmed me. I could not believe there were that many homeless people in my community. Another volunteer project that my club participated in was a canned food drive for the

Honesty, authenticity, genuineness, bravery, and valor are my top strengths. I was shocked by these results not only because I feel they are extremely accurate, but these are the things I value most in life, especially honesty, I feel that you can hate a man to the core, but if that man is a truly honest man you can only respect him. I want to be an epitome of a truly honest man, and I believe my character strengths will help me achieve this goal. My bottom strengths were the love of learning, self-control, and regulation. As a youth group member, I was lucky enough to get the chance to go to New Orleans in the summer of 2011. During my stay, I was able to help others in a way that changed my life. When I was helping serve food, picking up trash, and helping to restore a church, I looked at children and families who were receiving that help. Their faces were priceless. It was like they won the lottery. Helping young and old, children, and families who were less fortunate than me, made me realize that I want to help people in some way when I grow up. I was born in the suburbs of the Bronx and raised in the Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, I never understood the amount of hard work my parents had gone through to raise me and give me a great life I have today. They emigrated from South Korea to this country in hopes of the American dream. They had their definition of the American dream as working hard to become successful. They were strong believers in that hard work would result in great results and rewards. My parents took huge sacrifices in order to make it to this great nation. They had left their families, their jobs, and their culture to start a new life. My father went from being a chemical engineer to making a small living as a delivery man for a clothing company while my mother worked as nurse in a small clinic in downtown Brooklyn. We didn’t live in the best of neighborhoods, but it was sufficient enough to provide shelter and food. It took a lot of pain and long hours for my parents to provide for me and they have taught me the most crucial life lessons. They told me that the most important lesson is life is to always put other people before you. They explained how if you are always there to help others and be there for another person, they will return the favor to you. This helped shaped my identity as to be a caring person who is always willing to help out those in need. Throughout the rest of my life, I would encounter this life lessons…

Even after I had my license, I would create reasons to have my parents transport me places. Now I am able to drive comfortably. I also have learned how to pump gas and use a credit card. Perhaps my biggest change in society is my understanding of how people view me. I can control the way people perceive me, and it is important to present the best version of myself. My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects.
