Fluffy's Monologue
I jump up, “Where?”
“Outside! All the way around the road on the left side of the barn. His name is Fluffy, but you can change it. Ooh! And he’s already trained!”
“Thank you thank you thank you!” I exclaim.
I run outside of the house, without shoes, and sprint all the way to the barn. He was there! A little bit taller than me and dark auburn, he was fenced in. I climb up on the saddle, and I see my parents walking towards us, and they seem almost more excited than I am. “Just like how you ride a mouse!” My father shouts from down the dirt path. “Got it!” This was all I’ve wanted for the past two months, and I finally had it. Although I was very excited that my parents bought me a rabbit, it wasn’t really a surprise that they had, since I

When I visited they seemed a bit tired, I mean, with their new baby and such.”, my father mentions.
Auntie Violet and Aunt Persimmon just had a baby boy, named Thistle, and he was one of the most annoying babies I have ever met. He didn’t grab your hair or anything like that, but he just constantly cried. His eyes always seemed watery, and he was always wailing. “Sure. I guess that’s alright then. I’ll write them a letter.” “So I can go?” “Yes Maple, you can go.” “Yes!”, I say and do a little dance. “I’m gonna start packing for the trip!” “Maple, It’s a week away. You don’t have to right now.” “I know but I’m so excited!”
...
The week sped by fast, and it was finally time for me to leave. My parents had set up an arrangement so that I would always have somewhere to stay. Monday, Miss Cherry’s house, Tuesday, my cousin Coffee and his little sister's house, and finally, Auntie Violet and Aunt Persimmon’s apartment. I sat up onto August’s saddle, hauled my huge backpack full of my next week’s clothing, a map that seemed to cover the entire world, money, and food. I kissed my parents goodbye, and set out into the morning, which was surprisingly chilly. As August and I raced through the sunflower fields, I got more and more excited for the race. I hoped I would win, so that my parents would see that it was worth sending me to Pine

When I do wake up, I walk down to the bakery next door to their apartment building which is located in a tree. I get a muffin for myself, and two bagels for my Aunts.
It feels like forever, but my Aunts, Thistle and I are finally leaving for me to hopefully win this competition. We take the carriage that I took yesterday, which consists of a cardboard box, some wheels, and a mouse to pull it. Traffic is making this ride seem like forever, and it makes me realize, I’ve never actually had to deal with it before this. I feel bad for the other people on the carriage along with us, since Thistle will not shut up. It’s time. As August and I line up on the starting (and finishing) line, anxiety rises in my chest. I look up to see my Aunts in the stands, and they were easy to find if you just follow the sound of a crying baby. I look around to my left and right to see many other racers and their rabbits, taller than me, bigger than me, it doesn’t matter. I’m gonna win this thing. The racers and I climb on top of the rabbits, and we wait for race to start. “Ready, set, go!”, the announcer shouts and shoots a blank into the

She gave me a box, and put the guinea pig in it. We went to the car and I opened the box during the ride home. He was running around, and looked very nervous. He ran around hiding behind everything he could. After this I decided to give him the name Wolf in irony, as he was very timid.…

My anxiety flutted around in my chest and gripped each breath like a vice. The daunting and steep steps danced in my mind making the simple task of walking up stairs more difficult than the impossible task to run a mile in a minute. Next, a boy pushed the door open behind him almost as an afterthought, but in my chaotic mind it was the best thing all morning to happen. On the dreadful first day of school, chivalry was not dead, or at least that’s how I was able to comprehend his actions. I glanced around unsurely before starting to slowly walk towards the freshman commons; each eye that meets mine screamed enthusiasm.…

    All Shook Up

"Not again!" I protested when I heard Mom's news. "Where are we going this time?" We've moved six times in the twelve years since I was born. That's because my Dad's job is to set up offices for his company, and each time he finishes establishing a new one, we move. "California," said Mom. "I'm sorry we have to uproot you again." She opened a map and pointed out the town we'd be moving to, north of San Francisco. She truly sounded sorry, but I could see she was pleased, too, because she's from California. She'd always said Chicago was too noisy for her. For one thing, the elevated railway wasn't far from our apartment. Whenever the trains rumbled past, the chandelier in our living room swung to and fro. My stomach felt full of cold lead. You'd think I'd be used to moving, but I felt sick every time. Now I'd have to say good-bye once more to the friends and places I'd just come to feel comfortable with. Plus, Chicago was the most exciting place we'd lived. It had everything—great parks, libraries, museums, skating rinks, and playing fields. Only five blocks from home was the Youth Center, where I played volleyball or board games or just hung out joking around with friends. That day, after learning the news, I went straight to the Youth Center to find my friends. Their smiles turned into gloomy frowns when I said I'd be leaving in a few weeks. We grumbled about my bad luck. Finally, Eric said, "Moaning and groaning isn't going to change anything. Can anyone say something good about this move?" Sarah piped up, "Well, Megan…you'll be lying on a warm beach while we're still slogging through the snow." I pictured myself lazing on a stretch of white sand, a gentle blue sea rocking before me and palm trees rustling behind me. I could go for that. "Just think," added Josh, "no freezing rain or sub-zero temperatures." "No tornados. No blizzards," contributed Kayla. "Just lovely, sunny days." "Yeah. All you have to worry…

Beginning almost immediately, I am tossed from side to side as we make our journey to the meet. About an hour into the ride I feel a drop of water trickle from my forehead to my chin. Then, two more land on my cheek as I groggily open my eyes. The darkness surrounding the bus is engulfed in a downpour. I reach up and slide the rusty bus window shut. Great, I think, the course is going to be so muddy. The crackle of the bus’s speakers break the silence for my coach to alert us that we will still be racing as planned, queuing a symphony of disappointed groans.…

The racers were finally making their way to the starting line. That’s the moment when I became fearful for the fate of my mother. They were down at the stables one evening, and Miss Julie was training him--that’s what she called it. Do you know how? She made him leap over her riding crop, the way you teach a dog to jump. Twice he jumped, and got a cut each time; but the third time, he snatched the whip out of her hand, broke it into a thousand pieces and went off (Strindberg 72).…

“Adam?! Breakfast is ready!”. Geez, if only she’d just let me get out of bed before yelling at the top of her lungs. I stretch my arms and look around to the flag on my wall; the bright red and white including the geometrically perfect maple leaf in the middle. I miss home more and more… Putting that aside, I race up my flight of stairs, leaving my basement which I use as a room. Just the amount of privacy and freedom one may have when the doors are shut and a cool temperature is present, it makes me feel like home is never far away.Whatever, I’ll see my couch again this evening but oh how I’ll crave the curves of her cushions. Though, I know I can’t be late for my first day so I put that aside and: “Coming mother!”.…
