Football In High Schools
I remember Ms. Webb, my history teacher in high school would always say, “youth is wasted on the young”. Back then I didn’t think much of anything when she uttered those words. As the years steady pass I seem to relate more to Ms. Webb’s perceptive saying.

In high school I played football. Football was held above everything in my school as well as the little town that it was in. I remember skipping school many times only to show up at 3:45 for football practice. This was okay with coaches, teachers, and faculty staff as long as the players were on the practice field. Evidently this is a widespread trend among high schools in the United States. After reading the chapter “Back to Basics,” by Diane Ravitch (2012) I couldn’t help but form a

In the film Remember the Titans, a small town in Alexandria, Virginia integrates its schools in the 1970s. Challenges arose including academics, hope, and racism, but the the football team united the town and revived their innocence because the townspeople had something to hope for and put all of their energies into. The weekly football games were also a place to forget about all of life’s problems and believe that light will shine through. When attending these football games, all problems seemed to have disappeared. Many southern towns create a lifestyle revolving around high school football that revives hope, and hides all of the town’s dirty secrets. H.G. Bissinger followed up in the blue collar, Protestant, republican town of Odessa, Texas…

With reading the article “ Would I let my son play Football”,I came to a consensus that I would let my kid play football. “ How can I bash a game that produced so many friendships, paid for my education, and helped me become comfortable financially” .( Fujita 3). I agree with this article’s statement because football has helped people pay for college and help build their respective careers. Football has also made many people financially stable after playing in college and moving on to the NFL. “Football isn’t for everyone Scott ...but it was definitely for me”. (5). With Football not being for everyone, it is still made for some people, and if my son/ daughter wanted to play football then it would be made for them. The people that are made…

Until that summer, my long apprenticeship to maturity struck me as arduous and humiliating; Randy White had confiscated my fake draft card, and I wasn't yet old enough to buy beer-I wasn't independent enough to merit my own place to live, I wasn't earning enough to afford my own car, and I wasn't something enough to persuade a woman to bestow her sexual favors upon me. Not one woman had I ever persuaded! Until the summer of '62, I thought that childhood and adolescence were a purgatory without apparent end; I thought that youth, in a word,…

    1. According to the twelfth edition of Sports in Society by Jay Coakley, “"Generalizing about high school and college sport programs is difficult because programs and the conditions under which participation occurs are so diverse” (Coakley, 476). However, there are definitely some broad, widespread issues that are found within the majority of high school sports programs. The textbook offers a plethora of claims against interscholastic sports, and one that stood out to was the claim that highlighted the pressure that interscholastic sports place on student-athletes. Unlike club sports, high school sports practice for over 2 hours every day after school and have games on weeknights, leaving little time to prepare for exams and to get homework done.…

One of the health issues can be from CTE, which results in depression, dementia, and memory loss. CTE is something no one should have to live with and if it’s preventable by banning football, that’s what should happen. This disease also causes stress upon family members as well because they worry every time their loved one goes out on the field that they’re going to get injured. To prevent injuries and health issues, banning football would be the answer. With all of the bad effects football causes, banning football from high school sports would be a good way to prevent as many…

Players know the risks they are taking, and while the administration of leagues and franchises should do their best to make the game safer, and protect football players, players themselves have to be held accountable as well for practicing proper techniques, and preparing their bodies with training. Therefore, in my opinion, I strongly believe that high school football should always be a part of cities, states and the whole country. It is a game that teaches character, and life lessons, and benefits our society in ways that no one really…

September 13, 2013, was sixteen year old Damon Janes’ last football game. Why, because he was pronounced dead in a local Buffalo hospital three days after that game. His cause of death, brain damage. Janes took numerous hits to the head during a varsity football game. He seemed perfectly healthy, but in actuality, he suffered brain swelling, bleeding, and bruising all resulting from numerous hits to the head while playing football. Janes was only one of the eight high school athletes who died in 2013 from the brain and spine injuries they suffered while playing high school football. In addition to brain trauma, heart conditions, asthma and heat stroke have contributed to three times more deaths in high school players than in college football; all of which may have been prevented. Since the early 1900s the game of football has continuously evolved in an effort to protect its players from injuries and fatalities. In fact, the rules and equipment changes over the years have done just that for college and NFL players. Sadly, according to a number of studies, this is not the case at the high school level where many of these fatalities could have been avoided. It’s time to make high school football as safe as college and professional football so the rewards outweigh the risks.…

When we were children, our mothers and fathers would take care of us, whatever we needed they found a way to get it. They were out support beams, our shoulders to cry on, and our correction officers when we were in the wrong. They were also the ones we ran to when we had our scars and bumps. We knew that they would give us the right things to make us feel better. When we get older we begin to make more risky decisions, and sometimes those become bad decisions, possibly ending in injury.…

When in high school, one of the most memorable things to do is go to the games, attend homecoming, or the pep rallies every semester. One thing they all have in common is that they are tied to sports. High school sports are an important part of children's lives whether they are the ones attending the game or the one playing in it. A few years ago, Solano County tried to cut sports programs because there was no room in the budget for it. The community reacted by spending their whole summer raising money in any way they could by selling things to standing outside of the mall collecting donations with the fire department. High school sports programs are important and should not be on the list of school cuts.…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

“ The error of youth is to believe that intelligence is a substitute for experience, while the error of age is to believe experience is a substitute for intelligence.” This allegation from Ernest Hemingway reveals that youth and elders have different ideologies towards the connection of intelligence and age.Young people feel that their intelligence makes up for their lack of experience where older people feel that their experience makes up for any lack of intelligence. I agree with this quote because I think people learn by their mistakes through experience which leads to a knowledge of not doing wrong twice. Everyone is always seeking intelligence though.Youth and elders both desire it but I feel that it could never be obtained; understanding is the only reliable source of learning. The two articles that clearly express this remark are “David Foster on Life and Work,” by David Foster and “What I think and Feel at 25,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…
