Forbidden planet is an epic science fiction film; easily the greatest of the 1950’s. It is set in the 23rd century on a planet called Altair. A crew is sent from earth to see what the status was of a ship of scientists who landed there years earlier. As it turns out, there is only two survivors, Doctor Morbius and his daughter. He says that a monster killed the rest of his crew; literally tore them limb from limb. Nobody saw it and nobody knew what it could have been, but as the movie one gains a better understanding.
The theme of this movie was the human weakness. These weaknesses include greed, power, and egoism. The internal threat described in this movie is that of the subconscious and the evil that resides within it. Morbius shows the most weakness. The reason that his id monster was released was because he did not want to go back to earth. He wanted to remain and take over Altair, and so it went and killed; he was greedy. He also desired power and this was why he wanted the rescue crew gone. He knew that internally he did not want them there and he could not control his inner evil. Although he was a genius, he had not been able to figure out how to control his monster. Another theme that is more relevant to class is technology. Things like the plastic educator, the underground laboratories, and the ability to freely travel through space are all great representations of technology in the film. The ideas were so advanced, even to solely be placed in the movie, such as a robot that can do anything.
The Krell were the civilization that created all of this technology, and Morbius just happened to find it. In one day and night the entire Krell race disappeared, and it was a mystery as to why.
