Ford Motor Company, the second largest auto manufacturer in the world was started in 1903 by Henry Ford. With 276 plants, distribution centers, engineering, research/development and sales facilities, Ford Motor Company manufactures and distributes in over two hundred markets across six continents. Ford Motor Company’s focus is to build a strong business that produces products that contribute to a better world. Their first sale was on July 15, 1903 and since then Ford has produced over 300 million vehicles.
Henry Ford believed in excellent treatment of his employees and he constantly looked for ways to improve working conditions; this is why when unions began to form he opposed them because he felt his company could and should be responsible for meeting all his workers needs. Union organizers began to focus on Ford Motor Company so Henry Ford decided to entrust Ford’s response to Harry Bennett, one Ford’s key executives. Harry Bennett was a powerful figure with a reputation of being tough. This toughness caused a period of confrontation which included violence. In the end the United Automobile Workers won the right to organize Ford Motor Company’s workers and in 1941 the first union contract was signed at Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford’s son was instrumental in getting the company to negotiate and sign the contract. Henry Ford considered his company being unionized as his greatest disappointment in business but, Ford Motor Company and the union began to work together to continually improve working conditions.
Ford Motor Company is part of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union which was formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1935. With over 500,000 members, the United Automobile Workers union is one of the largest unions in the United States. The UAW has been a strong and powerful leader in collective bargaining on behalf of workers and their families.
