2. What is rifling? What two types of markings do this produce?

3. What is a distance determination? How is this done?
Distance determination is the process of estimating distancing between shots. It can be done by looking at the patterns of powder, residue, and the shot pattern.
4. What is the Geris Test?
The Greiss test has chemicals that can help develop gun powder residue, around the bullet holes.
5. When a bullet is retrieved, how is it marked for identification purposes? What should be avoided?

In light of sniper shootings being on the rise for instance in the Washington area, four states are taking serious consideration in a new technology of creating a ballistic fingerprinting system enabling law enforcement the ability to trace shell casings found at crime scenes back to the maker and or buyer of the fire arm used. As of now Maryland and New York are the sole two states that are using such a database, however only a small amount of fire arms have been recorded so far which is seriously impeding the possibilities and achievements one…

Thank you for your interest in the policing strategies of the 2nd Division. I will do my best to answer your questions. First, I do receive, review and evaluate ShotSpotter information in the coverage areas on a continual basis. However, I do not use this information to predict future shootings because the vast majority of shots fired are not associated with a violent criminal incident which makes it difficult to determine when & where the next shooting will occur based upon that one data set. The value of ShotSpotter, in my opinion, is it notifies officers in a timely manner and serves as a reliable indicator of where the shots are coming from. This allows officers to respond more quickly, enhances their safety, and increases the likelihood of an arrest/ evidence collection. As you know, the evidence (shell casings) collected taken to the Crime Scene Unit and ran through NIBN. NIBN is a valuable tool which helps us establish links between when and where many of these guns are being used. Secondly, the majority of the shots fired data indicated by ShotSpotter on…

Mr. Potterfield begins the video by explaining the role of checkering on gun stocks. It aids the shooter by providing extra grip, and is visually appealing as well. He showed several different variants in the beginning. Each one of the examples he shows has their own pattern, and design. I must say that I do like the ones with margin, as they look more clean. The others with the checkering all the way down sort of lack that professional looking appearance, as they are not tapered off. Mr. Potterfield goes on to show where to make the markings for the checkering of the fore end of a weapon. To begin the…

A bullet is a cylinder of lead that is fired from a gun, the actual bullet is covered with a metal jacket. Bullets travel at very high speeds, some bullets can go up to 5,500 meters. Ball bullets are used mostly in the army, or hunting. Tracer bullets are bullets that leave a line of fire after being shot from the gun. Armor piercing bullets have a center of steel and blunt noses, these bullets are used to take down tanks and other big machinery. Dumdum bullets have jackets that do not cover the front of the lead, these are more dangerous because they spread out instead of just one big slug, these types of bullets are used in big game hunting (World Book Encyclopedia “bullet”).…

Much like in Toms case, most investigations start with a crime having been committed. Forensic ballistics and firearm investigation start when there are bullets, cartridges, a weapon, or any combination of the above found at a crime scene. With the evidence, a crime lab can search for clues on these items that could lead to a suspect or possibly prove that the items were used in the crime. By comparing the markings on bullets or cartridges found at the scene with those fired from a suspect's weapon, a ballistics expert can often determine if the rounds came from the same weapon. Just the act of cycling a cartridge through a weapon without firing it can leave permanent scratches in the case that are unique to the weapon.…
