Fourth Of July Dinner
4th Of July Dinner

This 4th of July, I invited my best friend Sara and her husband for a dinner at my house. For dinner we decided to bake chicken and lamb chops with side dish of potato egg salad, spicy garlic broccoli rabe, radish and chive edamame salad. For dessert, ice-cream and brownies and some red wine to drink. Sara volunteered to get potato egg salad and wine as I took the responsibility to cook the rest of the meals. I knew I only had a couple of hours before the dinner so I started cooking early. I marinated the meat and put the meat in the oven to bake and started working on the side dish. In 85 minutes, I was done with all my cooking. I quickly went upstairs, took a shower, got dressed and came downstairs just in time to welcome

The Dinner begins with Thomas Jefferson’s account of the Compromise of 1790. Jefferson explains that Hamilton comes to him discouraged that his fiscal policy was being blocked, with most of that opposing force coming from Madison. In order to help them resolve this issue, Jefferson invited them to a dinner, where a compromise was reached; Madison would leave the assumption bill to its fate, and Hamilton would ensure that the Nation’s capital would lie along the Potomac. The assumption bill passed, and construction for the nation’s capital began along the Potomac. However, Jefferson’s story precipitates several question: was the affair really that simple, and why were these three men so fearful of the nation’s future? Ellis takes us through…

Scrumptious flavors and aromas accompanied a night filled with great music in Hennepin Avenue’s Famous Dave’s restaurant, where Tommy Castro and the Painkillers put on a show like no other. Tommy Castro lived up to his reputation of being former BB King Entertainer of the Year on Friday, October 7th, as he moved the entire crowd through his music and stories. This foot-tapping music was perfectly complemented with Famous Dave’s All American Feast, which consisted of mouth-watering ribs, flavor-filled corn, juicy country-roasted chicken, barbeque smothered brisket, crispy famous fries, bacon infused beans, creamy coleslaw, and godly corn bread. To complete the decadent meal and the night full of blues music, bread pudding and ice cream were…

    An Ex-Mas Feast Summary

    • 1889 Words

Uwem Akpan’s story, “An Ex-Mas Feast” is a story of the struggles that one family goes through to give gifts on their upcoming Christmas season. Akpan introduces the reader to the struggles of the main characters, which directly ties into the details of impoverished town that they live in. Jigana, one of the story’s main characters, starts off as a naïve 8 year old little boy who was anxious to start going to school. In a stark contrast, Maisha, the eldest sister at 12 years old, held her own and prostituted to bring in money for her family. The second oldest, Naema, was closer to Maisha than any of the others, and Maisha gave her tips and tricks of her trade. Akpan begins the story by saying that the family Maisha had never forgiven her parents for not being rich enough to send her to school, and how she avoids them as much as possible. In addition to ignoring them, Akpan describes her actions as that of a “cat that was going feral” (5). Although they are not the main characters, Jigana and Maisha also have a twin brother and sister named Otieno and Atieno, and a baby brother, who they refer to as Baby. Their mother, Mama, seems to be kind of a mess, which could be the result of sleep and alcohol, and their father, Baba, was a lowly pick pocket who could barely provide for his family. However low the parents are, they always push Jigana to go to school, but they do not give him any reasons as to why he should strive to achieve that goal. As the narrator of the story, Jigana states in the beginning that unlike most street families, their family had stayed together, but only until that Ex-mas season. The setting plays a large role in the story, almost as the antagonist because it causes a lot of distress to the family. Their home is hardly what you would call a house; it was a shack with a tarpaulin roof and brown polythene walls and had old dumped cushions for floors and a board as a door. Nairobi, at the time, was having bad…

They said that they appreciated our kindness and wanted us to have a great Christmas and New Year. The couple went ahead and ate their meal, and after twenty minutes, they came back and thanked us again for the meal saying that it was delicious and tasted like home. The couple’s demeanor mirrored the demeanor of the other guests, and I was just going to lump their compliments with the others and continue thinking about what I have planned for the rest of the day, but after learning more about the couple’s reasons for being in the house, we all came to understand how special that compliment…

Each year, United States citizens celebrate Independence Day/The Fourth of July with cheerful barbeques, music and fireworks; but African Americans seem to also delight themselves in getting together for the Fourth of July as well. They celebrate by having cookouts, laughing, socializing, lighting fireworks, and generally enjoying themselves together. But, what significance does the Fourth of July really mean for those who were slaves? This question is worth exploring. Frederick Douglas seemed to share the sentiments that the holiday meant nothing to us as a race of people during his time. Douglas’s speech regarding the Fourth of July expressed heartache, pain, embarrassment, and humiliation. To those sitting before him, he let it be known that he was a former slave, and that they were the only ones who truly benefited from Independence Day. Why did they call upon Frederick Douglas to speak that day? This is the question he was asking, nonetheless, he expressed how he felt regarding this holiday. He conveyed that Independence Day did not show true equality among all people. He further stated that all men were not created equal and that The Constitution did not apply to his race of people. Throughout his speech, he articulated that, in his opinion the celebration was hypocritical and insulting to slaves.…

Thanksgiving: Then and Now Americans love Thanksgiving. Let's face it. They love eating, and they love football. But, where did this holiday come from? Actually, the tradition of Thanksgiving dates back to the time before our country's birth. Modern day Thanksgiving represents a time where Americans gather together with their friends and family. It is a time of year where people are thankful for being blessed with these friends and family. The first Thanksgiving was also a gathering where its participants gave their thanks for what they were fortunate enough to have. The Pilgrims are credited with organizing the first Thanksgiving after they arrived in America. It was a celebration of a bountiful harvest. Both the early and modern Thanksgiving centered around a feast consisting of a variety of foods. There are few other similarities to discuss aside from these. Overall, there is a sharp contrast between the first Thanksgiving held nearly 400 years and the Thanksgiving that Americans now celebrate in modern times.…

When my group mates and I meet again, everybody was excited especially me because we will be buying the ingredients that we need for the food presentation. It’s already been a long time since I last go to a market and I really don’t know how to choose from what’s fresh or not and to buy or not to buy so I asked my group mates to teach me the basics in buying fresh vegetables, meats and fruits. Luckily, Florevil knows something about cooking so we didn’t had a hard time dealing with it. Since me and some of my group mates don’t know how to cook, we are assigned to prepare the ingredients and make sure everything is ready. While Florevil is cooking the meal, I watched every step of it so I can cook it at our house when my mom is not around. As the meal is almost done, some of my group mates prepared the dessert and the side dish, some prepared the table and set it in a presentable way and some called the guests who will taste the meal that we prepared. I couldn’t resist myself to eat when I smelled the Chicken Curry but I have to because we should serve the…
