claims that friendly behavior of domesticated dogs is the result of genetic selection. This article did the most effective job in getting its claim across. In the text, there is the use of quoted words. The author interviews four different experts throughout the article (paragraphs 11-22). This makes the support for their claim strong because the reader is getting multiple points of views and facts. This also gives the source validity for the reader because it shows that the facts and opinions are not made up or inaccurate. The source also gives the reader number and stats, in a quote by one of the many interviewed experts. The text quotes ‘“By the tenth generation, 18 percent of fox pups were elite; by the 20th, the figure had reached 35 percent,...”’(paragraph 11). This makes the source more effective because it helps the reader find facts and see the details. It helps them recognize the evidence. The article gave the readers enough depth to fully understand the topic.
The informational article, Yawns are contagious among wolves just like humans and dogs, by Newsela, claim that highly social animals yawn to show empathy for others. This source was not as effective as the first source. In the text the author gives a quote from a scientific journal. It states ‘“Domestic dogs are unusually skilled at reading human social and communicative behaviors,...”’(paragraph 7). This shows an example of quoted words. This tells the reader that animals can connect to humans by learning their behavior. Domestic dogs are skilled at this because they spend time with humans. In the text there is another example of the nonfiction signpost quoted words. The text states, “‘Yawning in wolves is contagious,’ the researchers concluded. To them it makes sense that highly social animals like wolves would yawn because it ‘promotes social cohesiveness of the pack.’” (paragraph 15). This shows the reader that the source has validity because they are getting the facts from experienced researchers. This is not as effective as The quick brown (and domesticated) fox jumps over the lazy dog, because it does not include as much examples of quoted words and some of the information given by experts are paraphrased instead of quoted. The article is still well written but it is not as reliable and strong.
In the informational article, Study shows dogs and humans are more alike than was previously thought, by Newsela, the author suggests that dogs, just like humans, are able to understand and interpret language.
The article did not do the most effective job. In the text, the author shares details of an experiment led by Attila Andics and other scientists about how dogs processed words. The text states, “Dogs have a ‘rewards center,’ which is stimulated by pleasant things such as petting and food. The dogs' reward centers bounced excitedly when positive words were spoken in a positive tone.”(paragraph 7). This shows that the source has validity because the information is taken from an experiment and experts. This does not make the source as effective as the first source because the author does not use many signposts to get the point across. The author also includes quoted words. Researcher Attila Andics from Eötvös Loránd University was interviewed about his studies. He said, “‘It shows that for dogs, a nice praise can very well work as a reward,... dogs not only tell apart what we say and how we say it, but they can also combine the two..."(paragraph 8). This is an example of quoted words. This shows the reader that they are getting valid facts on the topic. The audience was given insight by the expert. This supported their claim but this was not as strong as the first source because it does not include multiple sources or
experts.
Dogs are able to connect to humans in ways that humans connect to each other. All of the sources show how and why dogs are significant and easy to connect with. All in all, The quick brown (and domesticated) fox jumps over the lazy dog, by Newsela does the most effectual and effective job in getting their point across to the reader. It seems like our pets are not so different and confused after all.
