In Freak the Mighty and “Everything will be ok” two different characters, Max and James living in the middle of two different lives learn the same life lesson. You can be who you want to be. Although these are two different stories, both characters have to overcome loss to figure out you can be who you want to be. but the one that died helped them make a big decision, that you can be who you want to be. In Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, main character Max Kane, meets a boy named Kevin (Freak) who has Morquio Syndrome. Max and Freak develop a good friendship after Max and Freak go and see the Fourth of July fireworks. Both kids are in eighth grade. Max lives with his Gran and Gram because his dad Killer Kane is in jail for killing Max's
mom. Everyone at school thinks he is dumb and will grow up to be a killer like his dad. They always say to him “Killer Kane, Killer Kane had a son who got no brain!” Kevin and Max go on pretend journeys slaying dragons and returning lost items. Freak rides on Max's shoulders. Freak and Max make their name together Freak the Mighty.Kevin teaches Max many things, but the most important lesson was when Freak realised that all the kids in the school were actually bullying Max. This gave Freak an idea. He taught Max to be who you want to be by taking him on journeys fighting bad guys like Tony D and slaying pretend Dragons and returning lost items which are things good guys do and everyone thinks he will grow up to be a prisoner like his dad Killer Kane. On Kevin's 13th birthday his mom Gwen invites Max, Grim and Gram to have a little party for Kevin. Sadly while Kevin was opening his brand new computer he has a stroke. He goes to the Hospital and is later pronounced dead. His heart had got too big for his body. Max does not want to believe that Kevin died. He tries to break into Freaks room but cannot get through the hollow wood door. Max will always remember Freak and how he showed him that you should be who you want to be. In “Everything will be ok”by James Howe a boy named James finds a homeless diseased cat while exploring the woods at the end of his street..
He wants to keep the cat and raise it as his own pet, but his mother says they can't because it is too diseased and calls James's brother Peter. Peter works for Dr.Milk which is where James is supposed to work when he grows up.Peter agrees with James mother and they take the cat to Dr.Milks and kill it. Peter put the cat in something that looked like a pretzel can and started pumping gas into it. Peter made James watch him kill the cat and killed his dreams of having something for his own. The cat continuously scratches the can trying to break free but it can't. This just makes James afraid even more.. After a few seconds the scratching slows then stops. James is sad and raged at the same time. He is mad at almost everyone including his mother, Peter and his dad. although the cat can’t talk it teaches James you don't have to do what others want you to do.James decides he will not go hunting with his dad, he will not work for Dr.Milk and he will be who he wants to be.James family expects him to do these things but he decides he will do what he wants to do and he will be who he wants to
be.
As you can see two different characters in two different stories and two different lives learn the same life lesson. You don’t have to be who others want you to be. Both characters did not realise that their dead friend gave them the ability to be independent and not what others want them to be.
