I think they made this change instead of keeping it the same to show how it took a while for them to be friends, even after Max still didn’t want to be friends because of what had happened at the millpond. Another difference is that Freak ended up dying in his sleep instead of dying in the hospital a few days after having a seizure. They made this change probably because it would be too expensive to get the hospital and everything, and in the book Max runs to the medical research and breaks through, but in the movie he just runs in and I think they did that because it would be too expensive.
I think it is very important to make changes in the movies from the book because usually in books they are so descriptive to the point where some stuff aren’t that important or just too expensive to have in movies. With books you have to describe a lot to really paint a picture in someone’s mind, but in movies it will show you the really important parts from the book to really make up the movie and the whole plot, and without the plot it isn’t really based on the
