Free Throw Research Paper

When dealing with a basketball free throw, there are a few factors that play an important role to aid in this skill performance. The information that is used are the, player's body position on the court, movement of the body and the basketball that the player’s have contact with (Citation). Another factor is the body’s proprioceptors, these are used to help determine where the human body parts are at any given moment. The body is receiving constant sensory information from the muscles, tendons, joints, and the inner ear, which helps keep balance (Citation). The body’s muscle spindles are used to cause a contraction in the hand, that generates the force needed to shoot a free throw. All information is then sent to spinal cord & brain, via the
body’s afferent fibers. Then the information is sent to the efferent fibers and sent back to the body’s muscles to cause the contraction. In shooting a free throw, these receptors are crucial in determining the accuracy of a shot. These receptors tell whether the shot is too fast, too slow, or in the wrong direction. During the free throw follow through phase, the player must balance on their feet. Position of the head is monitored by the body’s vestibular apparatus, which gives us equilibrium.
