Freedom Of Speech Should Be Restricted Essay

Americans are guaranteed many freedoms by their constitution. Freedom of speech is one of the most wonderful freedoms. Throughout history, great social reforms have begun when one person exercising his or her freedom of speech. With this same freedom, others have victimized and endangered entire groups of people for their uniqueness. Free speech has been a controversial topic for many years. There are both positive and negative sides of free speech. Some people want to protect it as a human right; while others argue that it is dangerous and should have limitations. All can see how complete freedom of speech without consequences can be a very dangerous thing. People have a right to express their opinions and feelings without fear. While Americans enjoy this freedom, some abuse it. Hate crimes, racial conflict, profiling are all actions encouraged by abuses of freedom of speech. Therefore, freedom of speech should be developed as a human right or be restricted to protect people from consequences of hate speech.
The first reason is that people should feel free to disapprove if they feel their government has done something wrong. Freedom of speech comes with responsibility. According to “Why Freedom of Speech Should Never Be Restricted” (2015), “free speech is foundational to human flourishing” (para. 5). When someone, government or individual, is abusing or misguiding the public, it is the responsibility of the individual to speak up and put a voice to the injustice, whatever it may be. Individuals can share with their government ideas and opinions even if they are different from the majority.
