The late twentieth century was the rise of genetically modified organisms, a time of advancement that was both wanted and unwanted. The idea of combining various genetic material was first introduced in 1973 by Professor Herbert Boyer. In 1982 the FDA approved the first genetically modified organism for medicinal human use (Millis 1). Lastly, in 1994 the first genetically modified organism was approved to hit the shelfs of grocery stores around the country (Millis 1). Genetically modified organisms include microorganisms, plants, and animals that have been modified. Recently the rise of GMO crops have raised concern as to whether they are safe for the environment and, or fit for human …show more content…
GMOs are currently monitored by the
Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States
Department of Agriculture (Cornejo et al. 4). The FDA regulates the safety of the consumption of GM crops compared to their counterparts, non GM crops (4). The EPA regulates the use pesticides and the levels of toxicity that are present in GMOs (4). The USDA regulates the use of biotechnology, ensuring that GMOs pose little to no risk to the environment and the consumer
(4).
In conclusion there seem to be many benefits and concerns to the consumption of GMOs.
There are endless reasons for the support and ban of GMOS. Through research the consumption of genetically modified organisms may have negative effects on human or the environment, while at the same time it can help our environment and economy. The rise of genetically modified foods has come about in the past thirty years, which is a short time for such huge biotechnology advances (Domingo and Bordonaba 741). Thus, the past thirty does not suffice for the great advances that have been done and much more solid research is expected to be published in the coming
