news tells you that there's a devastating situation going on in the world. The news tells you that do to the law about GMO use is causing farmers not to be able to produce as much food as they need to be to be able to feed the growing population. That’s when you realize that the government was wrong for putting a law on GMO use. Now back to reality, what I just described to you could actually end up happening. There are people that are trying to get rid of the use of GMO’s because they do not know what they are and so they are scared of them and think they are bad.
But, in order to accommodate a rapidly growing population, it is necessary to increase crop production; therefore, the American public should overlook the negative media portrayal of genetically modified organisms and support the legalization of their use in food production throughout the …show more content…
U.S. What exactly are Genetically Modified Organisms? Genetically Modified Organisms or other wise known as GMO’s is a simple organism, which produces tens of thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen specifically by humans (John Green). So to sum up a GMO is where you take a unique trait from one organism and one from a different organism to make the “perfect” organism. Genetically Modified Organisms have been around for a long time even though many people think they were just created. The first recorded of DNA was in 1935 when it was discovered by a Russian Scientist Andrei Nikolaevitch Belozersky which isolated pure DNA (GL Woolsey). Since 1935, there has been multiple documented cases in which DNA has been involved. For instance, in 1982 the FDA approved the first genetically modified organism and it was later on put on shelves at local markets. In 1997, labels became mandatory on any food products by the European Union. In 2014, Monsanto ended their patent on roundup ready and made a new one. When Genetically Modified Organisms were made they had one goal for them and that one goal for them was to try and get more produce from crops and animals by using less land. Over the years scientist have discovered a way to get more produce from crops and animals but since they have the cost of using Genetically Modified Organism crops have gone up in price. By using genetically modified organisms instead of conventionally grown crops you are spending more money on the crop but in the long run you are get more in return out of the crop. One acre of GMO crops cost on average $761.80 while one acre of non-GMO crops cost $680.95 (modern farmer). Even though it may cost more to use GMO’s it is worth it. As stated by the Growers Association, “the world population has topped six billion people and is predicted to increase by 50% in the next fifty years.
Ensuring an adequate food supply for this booming population is going to be a major challenge in the years to come.” Many people would say that we should not use GMO crops because we can produce enough crops to feed the growing population but they are wrong. When a farmer uses a GMO crop vs. a non-GMO crop they are almost guaranteed something to harvest because the GMO crops can withstand floods, droughts, and they are more resistant to diseases and insects then non-GMO crops. Also by using GMO’s you do not have all of the hassle of conventional farming. In conventional farming, you have to worry about disease and insects because you have to use spray every so often to keep up with the insects and diseases while with GMO farming you do not have to worry as much or at all because the seeds are already disease and insect so they are more tolerable than non-GMO
farming. Genetically modified organism crops are a big part of the culture already. Genetically modified crops are used in our culture for many reasons. The main reason is to make a crop that is resistant to diseases and insects.
In the United States 95% of sugar beets, 88% of corn, and 94% of soybeans grown contains traits of GMO’s (Green).
