Rivera-Brown looked at the effects of unflavored water and flavored water that was comprised of carbohydrates and electrolytes. During his study he provided each subject with one of the two drinks at random. During each session the subject would have to ride the bike for 20 min cycling bouts. With a high intensity bike workout and profusely sweating the flavored carbohydrate electrolyte drink prevented dehydration. (3) The water had a negative fluid balance when sweating profusely. It was concluded that a flavored drink that was 6% carbohydrate and 18mmol/l electrolyte was beneficial in staying hydrated. (3) Singh and colleagues looked at the ingestion of Gatorade pre exercise. With a group of twenty healthy untrained men. They were separated into two groups, one group getting a placebo drink twenty minutes prior to the exercise bout and the other was given the Gatorade. (4) Subjects preformed a treadmill exercise. At peak exercise heart rate and blood pressure were taken, then again during the passive recovery phase. The main finding of this study was that drinking Gatorade twenty minutes before a bout of exercise delays fatigue and improves performance. (4) Even with Olympic class sailors Gatorade was beneficial in that it helped maintain hydration status throughout a bout of exercise.
