Gender Inequality If gender inequality is a waning problem, is it a problem that can correct itself without intervention? That is the critical question for universities and businesses throughout the United States. According to “a 1998 report by the Higher Education Research Institute, 63% of male professors are tenured, while only 43% female professors hold tenure. There is also a salary gap between male and female professors—a gap that has been declining, but nonetheless remains significant” (Banet-Weiser).
Historically, women have been unrepresented in the upper echelons of authority in both business and academia. Many students recognize the difficult path that women have followed during the last century. “The AAUP has issued policy statements about gender discrimination, endorsed affirmative action, provided procedures for correcting imbalances, and offered approaches to dealing with sexual harassment. But the AAUP, like the larger society, has failed to achieve gender justice in the academy, sadly evidenced by the dismal fact that the salary gap between men and women faculty has not improved over the past twenty-five years” (bowen).
Whether the under representation is due to historical or present discriminatory practices may be open for debate. There is no doubt, however that the past practices have had a negative impact on the present opportunities for women.
Despite the record of historic discrimination against women, the future is looking brighter. As indicated by M.I.T. President Lee Bollinger during the Presidents Workshop on Gender Equity held January 29, there are currently steps being taken to acknowledge and address the issue of gender inequity. Bollinger stated “There are many causes of gender inequity, making a quick solution difficult. We have to first recognize that there is a problem and commit ourselves to a solution. You have to care that something happened here. It’s a multifaceted problem” (Bollinger).

The wage gap between women and men may vary by career choices. In Jenny C. McCune’s article on “Bridging the Pay Gap Between Genders” she expresses her views on the wage gap and how the war is far from over for women looking to make equal pay as men.
