I started to watch the Simpsons at nine pm on Sunday night. The date of said watched show was May 29, 2011. The seventeen commercials that were shown were mixed and did not have a preference. The first commercial that was shown was a Living Spaces Memorial day savings on mattress. The next one was Time Warner Cable that was selling high speed internet. A car commercial about a Ram truck 1500 came soon after. Chase came out with a commercial talking about their new thank you card. The cell phone unleashed commercial came out with it being sold at Verizon and Wal-Mart. Metro pcs comes out with its family plan. Another car commercial, this time about the Mazda. Another Memorial Day event special on a 2012 cc sports VW. Dell Taco once again is shown but this it is talking about its tacos and how big and cheap they are. Carls Jr is the last commercial shown that depicts how the way they made them and sell their burgers are. After watching all these commercials I could see that there was some gender specific commercial but over all these commercials were mixed to all gender types. However we can see that these commercials are for the ages of 18 to 30 since all those shown in the commercial were young individuals and most of the commercials were either a working man seen or electronics that usually only the younger generation is savvy towards too. Also many of the commercials like the chase and time warner are shown to have a couple that is married and married couples that are married are usually around their thirties. The Time Warner Cable commercial shows a couple where the wife is pregnant and the husband is doing everything he can to make her happy. All this is going on while the commercial talks about the advantages of having Time Warner’s dvr. I can see they try to appeal to pregnant women and those that are planning on getting pregnant to get their product so their life can become easier to an

    The commercials presented during this show airing on September 6, 2013, were about cars, fashion, cell phones and coverage providers, a cruise, and food. With the coming of tax season, car sales tend to increase during this time increasing the amount of advertising about them giving them two advertisements during this television show. Both Volkswagen Passat and the Crystler 300 series shared the same themes of having an up-coming event. Volkswagen Passat is having, “The Sprintoberfest Event” and Crystler 300 series states, “Hurry in for great offers at the showcase event.” Fashion on the other hand has a theme of saving and buying things that are fashion forward. Marshalls famous saying is “Never pay full price for fabulous” while JcPennys stated “Truly yours” in their advertisement.     Women were overrepresented in advertisements for cosmetics and were less likely to appear in advertisements for cars, trucks and related products. Seventy-five percent of all advertisements using women were for products found in the kitchen or bathroom, reinforcing the stereotype that a woman’s place is in the home. Women as compared to men were portrayed mostly in house settings rather than business settings. Women did not make important decisions and lastly women were depicted as dependent on men and were regarded primarily as sexual objects. Courtney and Whipple (1974) defined sexual objects as, where women had no role in the commercial, but appeared as an item of decoration. Jake Lake and Brad Wadden say, in the portrayal of women in the media that advertisements promote extreme thinness or a thin waist and big breasts, misleading because these models don’t represent the majority of the population. These advertisements have women in them looking good but very seldom are they talking. These advertisements put pressure on women to get that “thin look”. This extra pressure leads to low self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Women are also portrayed as domestic laborers.     Gilman’s “ The Yellow Wallpaper” exposes a common gender stereotype during the late 19th century: by showing that men had more power over women, and how women were afraid to speak up for themselves.
