The author, Gladwell, has gathered his information from research taken of the students who have attended or are currently attending KIPP. Gladwell refers to statistics for reading scores taken from low income children to compare them to high income children, and compares KIPP’s year round schedule to a public school who has many vacation days in order to prove more school time is the main factor of academic success. School boards, and administrators were Gladwell's main target audience i his research.

    Malcolm Gladwell’s arguments center around an idea he calls “thin-slicing.” Thin-slicing is the concept that our unconscious can take lightning-quick bits of experiences and use preconceived notions about behaviors and situations to interpret them. Our unconscious thin-slices the world around us on a constantly– every person we meet or even already know we thin-slice.     Educational programs demand effort and dedication to be successful. Barber expresses his concern for the lack of literacy in America. In Barbers essay, he states, “As America’s educational system crumbles, the pundits, instead of looking for solutions, search busily for scapegoats” (Barber, 2014, pp.210).
