Edward Scissorhands vs. Donnie Darko

Edward Scissorhands and Donnie Darko are such good examples when talking about _GERMAN_ _EXPRESSIONISM_ . Both films are extremely different, but using the same techniques. Both film have many similarities with the classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In matter of the case set design, colour, camera techniques and sound are going to be the subjects. Edward Scissorhands (1990) Directed by Tim Burton. Donnie Darko (2001) Directed by Richard Kelly.

In Edward Scissorhands, most of the time the story happens in a pastel colors community, but the main character (Edward) used to live in a very dark and gothic style castle that is right in the end of one the streets in the community. The contrast between the two settings is to establish the huge difference in the characters as well as setting. The colorful community is boring, everything looks alike, and it goes to the cars as well, same model, same palettes of color as well as the characters clothes. Edward's castle is dark, and it is more to represent his individuality. For the fact that the castle is dark and is on the top of the hill it imposes a tone of threatening. Everything within the castle is about Edward personality; the garden and the inside of the castle give away some important information about Edward. The Garden: there is where is showed Edward's soul. He made everything in the garden, and it all is beautiful and colorful. In the castle everything is super gloomy. Even before get in the inside there is the door handle it is way to big and it is in a different shape. Inside the castle everything have a different shape as usually would be, the windows are too big but do not bring enough light to the castle. Edward's bedroom is wide open, but there is a giant hole in the ceiling and this role represents a great loss or pain within him. All this is revealed to the viewers even before Edward's. All the setting design combined is an aspect of _GERMAN_

Tim burton uses many techniques that reflect him as an auteur. Uses clothing’s and colour to juxtapose characters, give them meaning and set a mood. He uses significant turning points to give the character a meaning. There’s contrast between Edwards house and the suburbs to show the differences between Edward and the citizens, and uses themes like prejudice and conformity to show it was a normal suburb for the 1950’s to 60’s.…

In this movie, all of the houses are a vibrant neon like colors and the people are wearing bright colored shirts and dresses. People think it would be a nice movie until you see Edward, instead of being bright and colorful he wears all black and his face is really pale. I think burton does this to show that the people are innocent and somewhat clueless but Edward is dangerous and a threat creating a barrier between the town and Edward.…

To begin, Burton uses lighting to create an eerie and suspenseful mood. One way that Burton does this is through low key and side lighting, for example, in Edward Scissorhands when Edward is walking through the front door towards the police, there is light coming from the side that appears on one side of his face, which gets the audience to think “what will happen next.” later, when the audience sees Edward save Kevin from being hit by Jim’s van there is low key lighting, which causes the townspeople to believe that instead of Edward saving Kevin, they believe that he is trying to kill him. This example of low key lighting is helping to create a suspenseful mood, seeing as though…

The position of the castle again sets us up to view Edward as an outcast as he is looking down on society which shows us how much he wants to be a part of it but cant, and toward the end of the film we see how he looks down on society as a whole because of it’s cruel and prejudice nature. Tim Burton’s 1990 Edward Scissorhands creates a whole new world for viewers to enjoy: the classic, perfect world of suburbia with each family living the American dream versus the unknown world of an uncommonly gentle man who is nearly human. The film Edward Scissorhands shows that Edward’s gothic castle and the perfect town of suburbia are meant to be two separate worlds though Edward desires to live in a perfect world, and the people of suburbia desire a change of pace from everyday life. The film also shows how the characters’ costumes and styles are related to their personalities, and how teenagers have hardly changed since the 1990s.…

To develop the contrasting settings in Edward Scissorhands, Burton uses shot-reverse-shots. These shot-reverse-shots show the dark, lifeless mansion contrasted with the bright, lively neighborhood. These two contrasting settings show how two outrageously different things/people can still be together and be happy. Also, it sets up the rest of the movie by expressing whatever/whoever lives in that ominous mansion must be frightening. Another example of contrasting settings is when Peg is in Edward’s house and when Edward is in Peg’s house. Burton shows this by using long shots to show how people who come from two very different places can be happy together. Also, this develops Edward as an outcast character by showing how much different he is compared to Peg’s typical life. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Burton uses long shots to show the difference between the Factory and Charlie’s house. These long shots develop the amazing factory and Charlie’s raggedy house as contrasting settings. In addition, the long shots put emphasis on how old and raggedy Charlie’s house and living conditions are by comparing them to the fantastical factory. Not only do these long shots show Charlie’s old and raggedy house, they also display how amazing and superior the factory is to everything else. This makes it a bigger deal to get the golden ticket, especially for Charlie because people view…

Tim Burton establishes Edward as an outsider who is physically, socially and sub-culturally very different from the rest of the community in the stereotypical suburban area. Edward lives in a distant mansion, resembling the Gothic architecture located on a mountain that is severely detached from the society surrounding him (and is made clear through camera angles), and his home is Gothic, haunting and features a darker palette of colours, unlike the other houses in suburbia that are presented in mid-shots as colourful, but also similar and never-changing. His physical detachment from society parallels his social isolation as he is marginalized on the bias judgment brought upon by his physical appearance and his disabilities. He is consistently polarized between social conventions and himself, and the pronounced differences are evidently outlined without any attempts made to disguise or deny the anomaly. For example, when Edward enters society in all of his differences in colour to emotions or reactions, Edward’s differences are exposed directly to the viewer. It is put squarely to the viewer that Edward is an outsider that has been marginalized and has been made an alien in the generalized society’s assessment of Edward. During panoramic shots of the garden of Edwards manor, we are shown his creative talents, whilst maintaining the theme of his differences,…

Affandi was musing in front of Max Ernst’s painting, Polish Rider, which won the grand prix in Venice Biennale 1954. Max Ernst was one of Dadaist activists and surrealists whose works were deeply imaginative and fantastic, blurring the boundaries of near and far, the real and the imaginary. Max Ernst’s works, writes Paul Eluard, “[were] no far – through the bird – from cloud to the man; [were] not far – through the images – from man to his visions, from the nature of real things to the nature of imagined things.”[i]…
