Girl Monologue
aBeing a dressmaker, a lot of people boss me around, “ Flora, do this ” “ Flora, do that! “ Always saying I’m sensitive, yes I may be but that doesn’t mean you should describe me like that all the time. Now it is my turn to describe them.

Turtle, a little girl, sweet once you know her, though she will kick you if you have made her upset. Her name is really Alice, but no one calls her that, I call her that to make her feel special. Her mom doesn’t pay much attention to her, so since she is my partner, I feel like I need to get along with her and make her feel special. She always wears braids in her long beautiful hair, she has me braid it, and it makes me feel like I have my daughter back. I think Alice is the closest thing I will get to a daughter since mine’s death.

She needed crutches, and now everyone notices her. I don’t really know what happened to her and why she needs those crutches but, that could be because I am just a dressmaker, overlooked, but needed, underestimated, but impressive. Sometimes Sydelle can be a little, fake, but that’s just because she wants attention, just like Alice, they don’t get a lot of “ good “ attention, so who wouldn’t be overdramatic sometimes. The strange thing is, why did Sydelle have purple stripes on her

Crazy Ava is directly inside the open door with the EMTs at her side, fussing over her again. Except this time something is different. Lying on the sofa with her mouth half open and the paramedics kneeling over her, a fossil of an eastern bloc peasant, the type that you smell rye bread, sauerkraut and old brick dust on, her sour expression has vanished. And sure enough, she is wearing that Parasztok headscarf again.…

Now, March 18.. Clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk. I could hear the tapping of the Captain’s peg leg on the deck as he paced. I could also hear the slightly lighter thumping of my mother’s heavy boots as she took baskets of herbs up and down the stairs. The boots had originally belonged to Father, but Mother used them now, calling them more “seaworthy” compared to the delicate canvas boots that she used to wear.…
