A couple of my friends have asked why I write so much. I guess they have seen some of my articles and do not understand why I keep writing. I told them I was trying to give something back to the clowning industry. As you might suspect they did not understand and asked what I meant.
I feel that we all share a responsibility of giving something back to clowning. If you are like me someone was there when you reached out for help. For me it was a close friend who selected me to mentor. He helped me with makeup, costume and got me started with my clowning.
I also met a few others who helped me learn more balloons and magic. Then I took an interest in skits. Talk about launching someone into a land of fun and excitement. …show more content…
I performed every chance I got. There were even other friends who called asking me if I would like to drop by and walk-around during some of their events.
As I continued my clowning I added more props and walk-around materials.
I finally produced my own clown show complete with music, choreography and bigger clown illusions. All the while I touched based with all kinds of support sources. But I never forgot the very first person that helped me.
It was not long after I got started that I began to share some of my skills with other clowns. I made it a point to attend seminars and conventions. It didn’t matter if I already knew the material. I was anxious to hear another clown’s presentation. There wasn’t a single duplicated class that I attended where I didn’t learn something new.
As I approached retirement age I began writing. Most of my books are available through a magic site as they deal with magicians. I do have a few works that relate to clowning. And, I was invited to present my “Sponge Magic” lecture for the Korn Patch Klowns in Des Moines Iowa. I can still hear some of the comments. One stands out in my mind.
This lady didn’t feel she could work with sponge balls. She told me her hands were too small. But during my presentation she began to use them. And, I could see her face light up as she started to realize she could start using sponge with her clowning. Her comments, along with others I have received by email remind me that I am working the “give back”
responsibility.
Flip through the pages of “Clowning Around”. You will see many different faces and names. Each one is giving something back to the industry. Visit the website and look through the names in WCA leadership. They are giving their time and energy to give something back. Those instructors at the convention, alley personnel hosting the event and others administering those events are giving back. Are you?
