“Diversity can be defined as characteristics or traits that differentiate a group of people from another. This can include race, gender, age, socio-economic status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and geographic location.” (Nickels, W.G., McHugh, J.M., & McHugh, S.M.) How exactly can diversity define a corporation? Being a diverse company it shows that the company is opened minded to ideas and people outside of their norm. For example, Energizer Battery used to be a part of the Ralston Purina Company. The employees at Energizer and Ralston were not as diverse as they are today. In 2000 Energizer Battery broke away from Ralston and became their own company. After breaking off into its own company, Energizer became a more diverse company by hiring employees that didn’t necessarily fit into the normal supply chain industry. They wanted employees that could bring something new to the company that weren’t there before. Energizer’s philosophy about diversity is “Diversity goes beyond the traditional focus of race and gender to include such issues as disabilities, diversity of thought, habits, lifestyles, religious beliefs and more.” (Energizer Battery Steering Committee)
Currently Energizer has locations across the globe, from the United States all the way to Australia. There are American employees working for the Asian locations and everywhere else throughout the world. The Americans bring diversity to the different lifestyles of Asians or Europeans as well as the Asians and Europeans bring diversity to the American side of the business. My opinion is that Energizer has become such a successful global corporation because of the diversity within the
