To begin with, Genetically modified organisms are plants, animals, or microorganisms in which the DNA has been altered artificially by humans. …show more content…
GMOs are used in many products. In fact, 85 percent of corn is genetically modified. Some other foods that might have GMOs are soy, milk, alfalfa, sugar beets, canola and much more. There are some studies that show that GMOs have negative impacts and should be banned in the U.S but there are many studies that prove these claims to be wrong. Next, GMO foods provide nutrients that are needed in the daily life, help prevent deadly diseases and help the economy.
To start, GMO foods provide nutrients that are needed in the daily life. According to Nelson, Bryan, “The GMO banana, is a vitamin enriched version of a common East African cooking banana. Vitamin A deficiency is estimated to kill up to 700,000 children annually and causes about 300,000 cases of blindness globally each year, so the enriched banana has the potential to significantly impact public health for the better.” This piece of evidence states that GM foods provide nutritional benefits such as an increase in Vitamin A. It also decreases malnutrition all across the world. Also. GMO foods should not be banned in america because it can prevent deadly diseases. Scientists at the University of Central Florida, demonstrated a possible way to cure Type-1 diabetes, “We fed diabetic mice capsules of insulin derived from genetically engineered lettuce which provided lasting relief for millions of type-1 diabetes sufferers.” This is explaining how type-1 diabetes can be cured because of GMOs. Not only does GMOs not prevent disease, but GMOs help prevent diseases. Lastly, GMOs have economic benefits. According to UNU.EDU, “Of 15.4 million farmers that planted GM crops in 2010, over 90 percent (14.4 million) were resource-poor farmers in developing countries, including in three African countries: Burkina Faso, South Africa and Egypt. Almost 100,000 farmers in Burkina Faso cultivated GM cotton crops, which have benefited Burkina Faso’s economy by over US $100 million per year.” By adding GMO’s into the economy, farmers are now able to gain so much profit and these GMO’s are boosting the economy. All in all, GMOs have many benefits including economically, nutritionally, and
medically.
Finally, some may argue that GMOs cause diseases in humans, hurt farmers, and that alternatives to GMOs are preferable. Although some may think that GMOs cause diseases in humans they don't think about how that a patient ate genetically modified tobacco and they were relieved of Ebola. According to the Genetic Literacy project.org, “When American Ebola patient Dr. Kent Brantly arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, Aug. 2, he had reportedly already had one course of treatment with an experimental drug called ZMAPP made with genetically engineered tobacco.” This explains how the ebola patient had already taken the GMO which allowed him to come back to america, relieved of the disease. Secondly, some may argue that GMOs hurt farmers but they are missing the fact that Farmers in India and China using Monsanto’s crops are seeing more than twice as much crop yield, among other tangible benefits. A study from ISAAA series of biotech profiles writes, “Bt cotton has literally revolutionized cotton production in India. In the short span of seven years, 2002 to 2008, Bt cotton has generated economic benefits for farmers valued at US$5.1 billion, halved insecticide requirements, contributed to the doubling of yield and transformed India from a cotton importer to a major exporter” This clearly explains why GMOs help farmers. Lastly, some people may argue that alternatives to GMOs are preferable. But a study from Spring Street Foundation explains, “In general, there has been increasing interest among the impact investment community in sustainable food and agriculture investments. Growing participation in conferences like Agriculture 2.0 and Slow Money Alliance, as well as fast expanding groups of Food Systems Funders demonstrate this interest. Entrepreneurs are gaining exposure at conferences and trade shows, and an ecosystem of investors, funds, and investees is emerging.” This clearly shows how increased investment isn’t necessary. The private and public sectors are both investing in sustainable agriculture. To sum it all up, although people might say that GMOs hurt farmers, cause diseases and that alternatives are preferred; these ideas are proven wrong because of the studies from ISAA, Genetic Literacy Project, and Spring Street Foundation.
In conclusion, many people like to think that GMOs hurt farmers, cause diseases, and that alternatives to GMOs are preferable. This is clearly wrong because of how GMOs are nutritional, prevent deadly diseases, and have economic benefits. There is much more evidence showing that GMOs are a good choice and that they should not be banned in any way. GMOs help make mass productions of food and help farmers make more money. Clearly, GMOs do not harm the U.S. in any way so there is no need to ban it in america. Therefore, without GMOs farmers would go out of business, more diseases will not be able to be cured, and that everyone uses GMOs to better their products and make the U.S a thriving country.
