Communication surveillance is the collection of information that's been communicated through various networks or devices, such as calling, texting, voice messages, and e-mails. A former FBI agent, Tim Clemente, reported on May 1st, 2013, that the government exclusively collects and preserves a bulk of domestic communications made within citizens everyday. The National Security Agency or NSA is one of many government agencies that have the authority to collect such information and store it in their databases. The NSA collects over 1.7 billion telephone calls and e-mails on a daily basis. This information is usually used to back up investigations or be held against someone or used in court.
The third type of government surveillance is transaction surveillance. Transaction surveillance is the monitoring of trade and financial transactions. If the FBI or other people of governmental authority track suspicious financial activity, such as drawing a large amount of money out of a bank account without reason, law enforcement agents have the power to investigate this activity and target whom they wish.
