Graduation Speech: George Fox University

Our guest speaker Brian had a lot to bring to the table on Wednesday. It was a great introduction to get my attention when he spoke that he was a George Fox University Alumni and that he went through the same situations that we went through. Brian also had the same professors that we did, and gave me the motivation to hear that everything we are going through is worth it in the outcome if we just stay committed in our business goals and future. The beginning Brian’s story was interesting when Brian said he was in accounting and that he wasn’t ever good at mathematics. Having Non-Verbal Learning Disability in school has always made math a struggle, but I’ve always had the gift of being a hard worker, and being good working with people. When Brian told, us you can be successful at Accounting even if you don’t have strong math skills was helpful and interesting to hear from someone who doesn’t have a background in business yet. During the course this semester from every guest speakers that we’ve had so far, I’ve learned that teamwork is a vital part of business and as a communication major I strongly enjoy having someone I can work with, and that’s something I knew I would enjoy about a career in this field. If I were to have a follow up coffee conversation with Brian I would like to talk about what brought him into accounting and what his personal thoughts about going into accounting are for him. It’s important to me as a college student to know what it took for someone who successfully made it in the business field to know what they went through to get to where they are today.
