When others are in need heroes are there to jump into action in order to fix the problem. Harriet Tubman helped slaves escape even though she could have been caught and sold back into slavery herself. This threat did not prevent her from jumping into action and helping others when they were in need the most. Bob Ridley in a speech said “hard times don't create Heroes”. Courage isn’t just exemplified in literature, but in the real world as well. Rosa Parks is a famous African - American civil rights activist who was born on February 4, 1913. The United States called her “ The First Lady of Civil Rights “ and “ The Mother of the Freedom Movement “. On December 1 in 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, she was on a bus. Parks refused to listen to the bus driver, James F. Blake, when he told her to give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger because the white section was filled. It takes courage to stand up for your rights, so imagine the courage it took for Rosa to do something like that back then. She didn’t have any legal rights or any form of protection, and she defied the law. She didn’t want to be treated differently anymore, and she thought it was wrong. “ The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,”she said. Rosa wanted to do something not just for herself, but for everyone else who didn’t have the courage to do what was…

Another character in the novel that demonstrated bravery was Dolphus Raymond. He was brave because he let everyone know that he loves an African American when it wasn’t right in other peoples’ eyes. He says, “They could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live.” (pg. 268) The reason why he lives this way is because he prefers African Americans. Dolphus Raymond even has mixed children with his wife. Another reason why he is brave is because he has a different mindset speaking as a white man; he believes that white people give hell to black people and that it is wrong.…

It is Mr. Ewell who accuses him of raping his daughter, which shows that even the lowest of white people are still higher than a black person. Bob Ewell is a drunken father of Maycomb’s poorest family. He is very racist and prejudice towards black people and actually lives in an old run down house is the “black part of town.” He and his family do not have much respect from the rest of the town. Even though there is a no chance of winning because of the inequality between whites and blacks at this time, Atticus is rising above the prejudice of society; therefore, he and his children will suffer verbal abuse from the other people in the town. Atticus is a hero because a hero is someone who willingly helps someone in need despite the outcome or consequences that may come.…
