I have quite severe osteoarthritis and have been obliged to take heavy-duty analgesics in order to cope with pain after walking. It gives me much delight to be able to tell you than in two short weeks of having two or three green smoothies each day, I have been able to reduce the analgesic almost completely and the excruciating pain after walking has disappeared! I cannot thank you enough, and have already begun to spread this good news. Yvonne, Australia I have to say your challenge was an answer to my prayers! I have had fibromyalgia for over 30 years. While I still have pain, it seems to be much less. My cravings for sugar have lessened. My depression is much less and I sleep better. My friend says that I look younger. Mary, Australia My under-active thyroid has improved; a recent visit to my doctor indicated this after retesting. Sue, Australia I feel good and my IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) has all but disappeared. I’m not tired or sluggish, as usual, and feel mentally clearer than I have for ages. Jacinta, Australia I have had long term issues with cholesterol, weight, adrenal fatigue, food sensitivities, Candida, joint pain, swelling, gloominess and moodiness. [Through the Green Smoothie Challenge] I need less sleep, my energy is steady and lasting, my mind is clear, my skin is clear and 'glowing', my mood is normalized and positive, weight is coming off, my body is firming and cellulite is going away, I’m losing fat and fluid but not muscle and I no longer even desire coffee for the first time in my life. Why don’t greens taste good to us? Isn’t our body wise enough to intuitively crave what it needs? Only a few times in my life I have met people who have loved and craved greens. They told me that their parents didn’t give them stimulating foods. I consider these friends of mine to be the luckiest people in the world. They are ecstatic about a piece of cucumber or a fresh tomato. Looking at snow peas makes them salivate. In the last few centuries, the human body has changed. The foods that have more stimulating tastes have become more appetizing to us than natural, unprocessed foods. However, everyone recognizes the reality that we cannot thrive on chocolate and pasta alone no matter how tasty they seem to be. I strongly believe that it is possible to restore our ability to like and crave healthy foods. We can learn to live on a natural, healthy diet, even though we have developed some powerful, unnatural cravings. The ideal quantity of Green Smoothie is 4 glasses (1 litre) a day. Include 200 grams ( 7oz) of leafy greens and 150 to 300 grams (5 to 10oz) of fruit plus 1 to 2 glasses of water. If this is too much for you to begin with, start with half this amount and gradually increase each day.Place your fruit into the blender with water and blend for 25 seconds. Add your leafy greens and blend until very smooth (30 seconds in a powerful blender and longer if your blender is not as powerful). Here are three of our favourite green smoothie recipes. Green smoothies are very easy to make. Even if your talents don’t normally extend to the kitchen, you’ll find it easy to impress yourself and friends with these delicious recipes. Banana for Beginners
The most simple recipe is made with banana and romaine (cos) lettuce. In fact many people love this smoothie so much that they drink it every day of the green smoothie challenge. Bananas and romaine lettuce are packed with great nutritional properties. Bananas give an instant and substantial boost of energy. Many people suffering from depression feel much better after eating a banana. Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. Bananas are high in potassium and low in salt, a great combination to help to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, a fact supported by the US Food and Drug Administration. The vitamin C and beta-carotene content of romain (cos) lettuce make it a heart-healthy green. Cholesterol becomes sticky when it oxidizes and forms plaque on the artery walls. Working together, Vitamin C and beta-carotene prevent cholesterol from oxidizing. In addition, the fiber in Romaine lettuce binds to bile salts in the colon and allows them to be eliminated. The body responds by making more bile. As bile is responsible for breaking down cholesterol the result is a reduction of cholesterol build up.
Berry Blast
In this recipe berries bring a sweet fragrance with a subtle tart overtone and make this low GI treat a real winner. Research is suggesting that raspberries have the potential to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and tumor formation. Raspberries contain ellagic acid, an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and prevents damage to cell membranes. Whilst fresh berries are best, freezing does not destroy their anti-oxidant activity and is sometimes more convenient. Berries are also heart-healthy foods. In a Finnish study, subjects who ate two serves of berries a day were found to have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol.
Warming Ginger
The combination of pineapple, mango and ginger in this smoothie gives it an Asian twist. If you are in a cold climate then don’t let this stop you from drinking green smoothies. Ginger is warming on a cold day and also helpful during colds and flus to help you sweat and promote detoxification. Ginger also eliminates intestinal gas, relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract and is anti-inflammatory. In herbal remedies, ginger is used to alleviate nausea, dizziness and vomiting. To benefit from ginger you only need to use a little, as the active substances in ginger are so concentrated.
Spinach has been found to have thirteen different flavonoid compounds with anticancer properties. Spinach has been shown to slow down the growth of cancer cells in the stomach and the prostrate and to be inversely related to the incidence of breast cancer. Spinach has also been shown to protect against osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer and arthritis.
Pineapple is an excellent source of manganese, which is an important mineral in energy production.
Pineapple is often recommended to promote good digestion.
