Abstract Paper #1
Greg Toppo: Do Video Games Inspire Violent Behavior? The idea that there is a connection between violent media and the behavior of those that are exposed to it has been going on for centuries and continues to this day. Experiments have been done to try to prove that violent actions portrayed in media do correlate with violent behaviors in children who have observed it. After many violent acts such as the Columbine High School shooting and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, both where the perpetrators were avid video game players, more people began to believe that violent video games are what led to the violent acts of the perpetrators. In the past 20 years society has fallen victim to mass murders perpetrated by children, even though overall crime is down. In order to better understand this; social scientists are conducting studies on whether violent video games contribute to this cycle of violence or are they just a tragic coincidence. In “violent Video Games: Dogma, Fear, and Pseudoscience” Christopher Ferguson argues that there is no significant contribution to video game violence and the up-tick in youth violence seen today. However, David Grossmann in “Trained to kill (children who kill)” argues that video game violence not only contributes, but also trains children how to…

Violent crimes and aggression can be motivated by violent video games. Columbine school shooters(Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold) and theater shooter(James Holmes) all played these games. They would play these games for long hours daily. Studies show violence is motivated by the games that kids are playing. They act out these violent and illegal actions on their games and then do them in real life. Most of the teens in todays generation can honestly say they have played a violent video game at least one time in their lives. Therefore, they have had to act out a violent action. There are many ways this can affect a child's behavior in a negative way.…

Dr Nicholas Carnagey is an Iowa State University professor of psychology and a research assistant. The paper discusses how violent video games affect a person 's behavior and if they manifest violence and show aggression in the real world after playing such video games. I learned that not all people who are exposed to video game or media violence turn violent. I think it depends on the person if he wants to get influenced from the game, to mimic what the game shows. This is just like the next source, discussing about what kind of behavioural problems violent gaming brings about.…

I do agree with this week’s speaker Sarah Lightheart one-hundred percent; I think that health is so hard to define because of the fact, there are so many different aspects of health. Health is not just eating right, exercising, and being social every now and again. There are six different dimensions of health that need to have some sort of balance in order to achieve the optimal level of health in oneself to in turn be healthy. To me, health does not mean that it you are lacking a little in one area of the six aspects of health that you are an unhealthy person, I feel that there needs to be more of a balance within all six dimensions. In addition, every aspect does not need to be at a maximum level for a person to be healthy; I personally focus more on the emotional, physical, spiritual, and social aspects of health and the rest just fall into place for me. With the exception of environmental health aspect, I do want I can but, I do not go out of my way to be more healthy in the environmental dimension, in which I do need to find more of a balance. In conclusion, the definition of health to me is a balance of all six dimensions of health I believe that each person has their own personal levels they need to maintain to be healthy, Every human has their own individual traits to be healthy, and what makes one person healthy may not do the same for…

Dr. Strasburger from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine says that there were normally four factors that applied to school shooters. One, they had been abused or bullied. Two, they had a mental illness. Three, they were socially isolated. And four, that they had been playing violent video games. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza played video games, but unlike violent video game he was playing a Japan favorite Dance Dance revolution at local a movie theatre. A manager at the movie theatre say’s that he would get so into the game that he would whip himself into a frenzy and the manager would need to unplug the machine just to get him to leave. In the 1999 Columbine High school shooting, the shooter's mothers blamed violent video games as the source of their violence but later to learn that home videos made by the shooter’s show that they were bullied and abused by the jocks at school and wanted to put it to a stop. Whether there is a mass shooting in the United States, it doesn’t take long before pundits suggests violent video games might be to…

According to the article “Do Video Games Kill?” author, Karen Sternheimer, brings up an interesting and controversial subject about video games. “If we want to understand why young people, particularly middle class or other stable environments, become homicidal, we need to look beyond the games they play.” Sternheimer starts her article by giving an example of the video game “Doom” that became a target for critics. Shooting at the schools in Kentucky, Oregon, and Colorado were most probably caused by video games. The author sticks to this explanation because of many influential opinions from politicians, news, and different groups of people. Media is providing information to the public about shooters being the ones who are playing video games.…

Mass shootings have risen to a high percentage in recent years in America; there have been more than two hundred mass shootings in the United States since the year 2006. Some of these shooters have certain similarities with each other such as being introduced to certain types of violent video games. Many of these games are believed to have certain negative effects on children who play these games; this issue has been around for over a decade on whether or not these games are too violent for younger audiences. Parents have become concerned with the games that are being manufactured today, and believe these games may lead to criminal behavior for children who play violent games. However, we do not have enough proven evidence that violent media…

In 2000 the FBI issued a report on school rampage shootings, finding that their rarity prohibits the construction of a useful profile of a "typical" shooter. In the absence of a simple explanation, the public symbolically linked these rare and complex events to the shooters' alleged interest in video games, finding in them a catchall explanation for what seemed unexplainable--the white, middle-class school shooter. However, the concern about video games is out of proportion to their actual threat.…

In Skinner’s argument, “Stop Pointing the Finger at Violent Video Games,” the point he is trying to convey is that crime has gone down since 1975 when they did not have video games. Therefore, video games cannot be the blame for kids and teens acting more violently if studies show crime has gone down. Skinner disagrees with critics who say video games make people violent because he plays video games and done not act violent. Jordan Skinner’s argument is valid because I myself play violent video games, as do many of my friends, and none of us have violent behavior.…

The controversy surrounding violence in video games stretches back to 1976 and involved violence against stick figures. Over the years, violent imagery has increased in the frequency it appears in games and in the graphic depictions of violence against people and animals. Concerned parents, activists and researchers have long suggested that viewing such material is inherently harmful to children and adolescents and encourages criminal behavior. When people looked for reasons why two teenage boys would murder their classmates at Columbine High School, violent video games were blamed in the press (McKibben,…

According to John DiConsiglio between 70% and 90% of teens in the United States play video games and it is said that 5% to 10% of those kids are addicted to gaming, but what about the other 80%? Although people may argue that the internet or video games cause adolescents to have antisocial personalities that isn’t necessarily true for every person. The internet and videogames can have positive impacts on both the world and people’s lives. The internet and both online and video games aren’t detrimental to adolescents’ intellectual and social development because they can be used for educational tools and they allow teens to become more involved in the world around them.…
