The Metamorphosis: RRJ #1 Summary: Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman wakes up, to find that he has been transformed into a giant insect. Gregor then notices his new body which includes an armor-hard back, multiple thin legs and a brown arched abdomen split into rigid sections. Gregors focus shifts to his room, and he notices a picture of a woman that he cut out of a magazine and he realizes how small the room seems. Gregor tries to go back to sleep, but has trouble when he realizes that he cannot turn over onto his side, which is the only way that he can fall asleep. Gregors thoughts change to his job as a traveling salesman. He hates his job. He hates that everyone he meets will only be an acquaintance and never an actual friend. We also get to see that it seems like Gregor feels like he is being alienated by the people around him. In line with his work life, when Gregor is stuck in his bed we ate told that he hates his job and the only reason that is his continuing it is because of his parent’s debt. Also dealing with his disdain for his work, he hates his office manager. Gregor also dislikes that all of the people that he meets will never be true friends. When Gregors mom is trying to reason with the manager about what a good employee he is, she hints at his lack of any friends. We learn through Gregors mom that he sits at home alone and never goes out, he stays home and reads the newspaper. This shows us that Gregor already lives in isolation and his transformation into a giant bug probably will not help his situation. As a bug Gregor is unable to work. Also now that Gregor is a bug his voice is so altered that he can’t talk with anybody, which doesn’t seem like it should be that much of a problem considering he didn’t have much of a social life to begin
