One of which was when I was twelve at a championship meet in Federal Way. I was doing the two hundred meter backstroke and I was racing a friend of mine that was, at the time, much faster than me. I wanted to beat him so badly, that for thirty minutes before my race I didn't talk to anyone. I warmed up extra and I even stretched out for fifteen minutes. I was ready to win. The referee blew the whistle, indicating that we were to enter the pool. Then, the take your mark. As soon as I heard the buzzer, I flew off the wall. I was losing by a lot at the one hundred. I was catching up and it was down to the last five meters. I kept thinking of how much I wanted to win and I touched the wall only six one hundredths ahead of him. I was probably the happiest I had been in my entire life. If I hadn't thought about how much I wanted to win and just dig deep into the finish, I probably would have lost. This goes to show just how much your thoughts can control a race or even your life.
Grit has many meanings to me. It means that you can push through when you need to most. Also, it means that you try your hardest all the time. Many people have potential but don't try hard enough to use it. You can be smart, but if you don't try, you won't go anywhere. You can be athletic, but if you don't put forth the effort to become great, you won't. This is why grit is so
