GNH Gen: What is GNH?
GNH stands for Gross national Happiness and it a devp apch that seeks to achieve harmonious balance between material well being and the spiritual, emotional and cultural needs of an indl and society.
It is a devp philosophy propounded by the 4th King od Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuk.
It is based on the belief that happiness can best be achieved through devp that balances the need of body with those of mind within a stable and sustainable environment.
It emphasizes that the material enrichment should not lead to spiritual impoverichment.
Therefore, it holds the state responsible to create conditions that would enable citizens to pursue happiness.
Govt of Bhutan undertakes this responsibility through a four pronged strategy popularly known as four pillars.
The Four pillars are:
a) Equitable and sustainable socio economic devp.
b) Preservation and promotion of culture.
c) Conservation of environment.
d) Promotion of Good Governance.
Pillar 1: Equitable and sustainable socio eco devp
It implies that all socio economic devp must be sustainable meaning that devp is pursued benefit not only the present but future generation as well.
It questions the fallacious belief that having more after meeting the basic needs results in more happiness.
Therefore, it urges moderation of consumption and scaling down our way of life on the basis of real need.
It also emphasizes that all actions of the state are aimed at and carried out to benefit equally all sections of society.
It is understood that the material suffering in the world is not because of the scarcity of food, clo and medicine but because of lack of moral persuasion for equity and the will to share through more just and efficient dist arng.
Actions to this effect are poverty alleviation, green economy and eco-literate society.
