Haidt Moral Dimensions Essay

In Haidt’s video on moral dimensions he points out some differences that liberals and conservators have created from themselves. “Open Individuals have an affinity for liberal, progressive, left-wing political views, whereas closed individuals prefer conservative, traditional, rights wing views” (McCrae, 1996). The five main foundations of moral dimensions are categories in subcategories harm/care, fairness/reciprocity, in-group/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity. Harm/care is a natural instinct that we all carry from being mammals. We as mammals have neural and hormonal development already in placed. Therefore, allows us to bond with others, care for them, and gives us emotional feelings when others harms the ones you care for.
However, humans don’t see it as power more as a voluntary action and some elements of love. The final foundation is purity/sanctity any type of ideology that communicates to you that your in control your body. An example is you have the control in what you put in your body. Lila and Ray’s actions activate some of Haidt’s moral dimensions. One that is seen through out the whole film is the first moral foundation harm/care. The two women care deeply for their children that they do what ever it takes to bring in money into the household. Lila starts to smuggle immigrants to give money to her mother a law because she is raising her child. Ray decides to start smuggling because she needs money to get the families dream house. A different illustration of the foundations is when the two women went back for the Pakistan immigrant’s baby in the storm. They both knew that they had to go back after they found out what really was in the carry on luggage. A second foundation that was illustrated in the film was in group/loyalty.
