One of the most challenging experiences of my academic career has been taking organic chemistry sophomore year.
In addition to challenging my time management skills, taking organic chemistry taught me to adapt to various teaching styles. The significant time I invested into this class took time away from other classes such as physics. Nonetheless, early in the semester, I realized that my usual methods of attending lectures and studying from the textbook and notes were insufficient. Therefore, I started seeking out online videos and tutorials as well as help offered from the learning centers at Rutgers University which provided me with visual and alternative methods for understanding the concepts. Consequently, I was able to get at least a B or B+ in these class in the fall semester and improve upon these scores in the following semester. My experience in this class has made me a better student and has instilled in me skills that have enabled me to excel in other classes as
well.
Middle school is a challenging time in the life of any individual, but this was especially so for me as I moved to the United States from India at the age of twelve. It was difficult at first adjusting to not only a new education system, but also an entirely new culture. Nonetheless, my experiences taught me to persistently ask questions and obtaining information from a wide range of sources and to integrate new information in a way that enables me to adapt. I have learned from my mistakes and have learned to see failure as an opportunity for improvement. With the exponentially growing body of research and advancements in technology, the success of a physician in the coming years will significantly depend on one’s ability to adapt to new techniques and information. Therefore, my experiences of moving to America has taught me to be resilient and excel in the face of change, which will prove to be beneficial to me not only as a medical student but also later as a physician.
In the past few years, I have volunteered in several hospitals, but my most rewarding experience has been to volunteer at RWJ Medical Center in the Critical Care Unit. This department sees patients experiencing the most severe illnesses and families in some of the most vulnerable times in their lives. This experience has made me realize the important responsibility for care I will be undertaking as a physician. Observing and emulating the integrity with which the doctors and nurses communicate with both patients and their families has been a humbling experience and has strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in medicine. Furthermore, volunteering in a hospital and interacting with people of different ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds has enhanced my ability to communicate effectively with different patients. With the growing globalism and diversity in America, the skills for communication that I have attained will prove to be invaluable to me as a physician.
