Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying,” depicts a setting of a small town in rural Louisiana in the 1940’s. Slavery was abolished in 1865 in the 1940’s, however African Americans were still not treated with equality. Entire towns were still segregated; schools, churches, stores, bars, etc. African Americans were no longer slaves, but still lived on White American plantations, tending to their fields, houses and families. Grant Wiggins, the main character in the novel, is an African American teacher in the small town who is challenged to teach Jefferson, a prisoner on death row, a lesson before dying. He is confronted with many race related issues throughout the story.…
I show outstanding character by being trustworthy, patient, and by helping others if they need help. If I say something will get done it will be done in a timely manner. For example, my dogs had to go out every one to two hours when they were being house broken so I made sure I took them out or asked to see if they were out recently. Another way that I show character in is MMA by being patient if someone does not understand something so they can get it or by trying to explain how to do it in a different way.…
My character has always been an important concept within my life. This is because character is comprised of honesty, selflessness, and compassion. No matter what the situation is, it has always been imperative to me to be honest with not just those around me, but with myself. For example, I once noticed that an instructor had given me a higher grade than I deserved on a quiz, I never hesitated to report the mistake and made sure that my work was graded…

Individuals that possess Character ethical perspectives tend to base their ethics on "what it is good to be rather than good to do." When judging another person's actions, he or she will look for ethical behavior based on their character. In this perspective, the character of a person is more important than their actions. When most people think of character they often associate it with the idea of having to do the right thing. I on the other hand believe character is more than just doing what is morally righteous. Our experiences, obstacles and most importantly, passion define our true character. Passion establishes the difference between obligation or choice and giving up or persevering. Our actions result from the passion we choose to dedicate towards different aspects of our lives including school, work, extracurricular activities and community service. Everyone values these aspects differently and that is what allows for each of us to have our own unique character. I believe people have a more powerful influence when they have a true sense of passion for what they are doing.…

Having character is being trustworthy, honest, empathetic and respectful. This means doing the right thing even when nobody's watching. I always search for the best in everyone because no one is perfect and we all have made poor decisions in our lifetime. I take responsibilities in my actions and others I am responsible for. It is difficult for me to admit that I am wrong but I still do because it is the right thing to do. I have had a friend who was suffering from depression and wanted to harm themselves. I was scared for them because depression is a disease and it is not their fault that they are like that. I had them speak to an adult and they are currently recovering. I was very scared that she had cut marks on her wrist because it could have gotten worst. I cried because I did not want to lose a friend. On a field trip, I found a five dollar bill on the pavement. I asked the first adult I saw who was slightly ahead of me if it was hers. She said that it must have dropped out of her purse when she was walking. The teacher was really surprised because she said I could have easily kept it for myself. I would feel bad if I took someone else’s money even if it was just lying…
Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” Dictionary.com defines adversity as “adversity n. adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.” Adversity is something that everyone will experience at some point in his life; however, some people face greater adversities than others. Morrie Schwartz and Elie Wiesel are two men that faced two of the greatest adversities that this world knows. Elie is a survivor of Adolf Hitler’s destruction of the Holocaust, and Morrie Schwartz was a simple man who lost a battle to Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS. Both of these men’s lives have been captured in best-selling…
