“ Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” (Arthur C. Clarke). “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both two attempted societies striving for equality and fairness for all. Failing to complete this achievement the two protagonists of these stories revolt against their societies and fight for what’s right. Although “ Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut , Jr. and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both pieces of dystopian literature, their portrayal of technology differs greatly.

The weapons in “Harrison Bergeron” are advanced and deadly. “ Diana Moon Glampers, the handicapper general, came into the studio with a double barreled ten- gauge shotgun” (Vonnegut 5). A shotgun is a powerful weapon that can do devastating things at close range targets. The weaponry is shown to be advanced and modern day. Weapons in Anthem are generic and more painful than deadly. “ The first blow of the lash felt as if our spine had been cut in two”(Rand 5). Whips are basic weapons used to torture people instead of kill. The weaponry is very archaic compared to the weaponry in “Harrison Bergeron” this shows they are far behind in technology. In conclusion, “ Harrison Bergeron” and Anthem technology field differs from each other one is more modern day while the other is archaic.
