What is a Dystopia Novel?
Anthem is definitely a dystopian novel. The novel includes almost every definition of a dystopia novel. In the article it says, “The dystopian stories are often stories about survival, their main theme is oppression and rebellion. The environment plays an important role in dystopian depiction. In every dystopian story, there is a back story of war, revolutions, overpopulation and other disasters. Dystopian stories take place in the future, but they are about today and sometimes about yesterday.” In Anthem, Equality had rebelled against the Council and had to survive not getting caught, while hiding in a tunnel. He claimed to have broken many laws, but he did not care because he was trying to prove a point. In Anthem, the Uncharted Forest, the tunnel, and the ravine played important roles in the novel. All these places were places Equality was mainly at. He also kept repeating these places in the novel. He also mentioned a time before the “Great Rebirth,” the “war” between The Evil Ones and others. By this, it is suggested that is how this age all started. The setting of time is confusing. The back cover of the novel tells us that the story takes place in the future, but in the novel it seems to take place in the past because he is writing his story after it happened. Also stated by the article it states, “All dystopias are keen on strict division of the citizens by intellect, ability, and class. Dystopian tales emphasis sense of powerlessness of the individuals in the face of the oppressive and brutal government run by totalitarian dictatorship.
