just due to the fact that those students have many things in common. There are several advantages and disadvantages to having cliques.
With cliques students can sit with people they share common interests with and most often get along. When you sit with people you are with often you can talk about things you have both been through. A disadvantage to the seating arrangement in the cafeteria is that you never really meet new people. Several high schoolers were asked the question, “What do you think would happen if every student just sat in the first seat they saw empty in the cafeteria?” There were many different reply to the question such as, “The friendly, outgoing students might make new friends or if two people sat together that did not get along then a fight could break out.” Another student said, “If they are shy, like me, then they would probably just sit at lunch and not socialize.” It is both a good and bad thing, sometimes, to meet new people, but its always safe to stick to the people you
know. When a student chooses their seat and are comfortable, then they feel like they are meeting their need to belong. When a teenager feels comfortable in their environment then they are most likely to excel. When they are comfortable at lunch with their friends they open up and express themselves in the one part of the day where they are not learning. Schools should provide this arrangement in classes. Students should be able to pick people they would like to share classes with so they are comfortable in their environment and can learn with one less stress. Students chose where they sit to provide a safe and comfortable situation for themselves. Cliques form in the cafeteria to due to students interests and likes. Teenagers flock to people they can relate to, so that is who they sit by in the lunch room. Cliques hinder students from socializing with different people, but they also provide an opportunity for them to sit with friends who harmonize with one another. In cafeterias the formation of cliques set a stable environment for high school students to be with people who relate to each other.
