Head Start Case Study
The Head Start program, The Creative Child Care, is a San Joaquin County funded preschool that provides child care for the children. Creative Child Care’s mission statement is: “To provide exemplary child development programs responding to the diverse needs to families through a comprehensive network of community support and collaboration.” The director of the center is Deonna Espinoza, she has been with the Creative Child Care program for 17 years, starting as a teacher. With funding from San Joaquin County, Head Start helps families find appropriate educational programs for their children that meets their child’s needs and the parents financial situation.     We will provide child care service for fifty-one children from the age of infancy to four years old. Children will be separated into four different age groups and cared for accordingly. Infants will be nurtured and delicately cared for by a very mindful and devoted staff. Research shows that proper child care has a large positive impact on a child’s language, pre-math skills, self-control, sociability, and cooperative play. Through this program, we hope to help children flourish with positive characteristics by planning daily educational and social activities for each age group. Children of age will also be given indoor and outdoor play and recreational time. Child care services will be offered during the day time hours of 7:30 A.M. until 5:30 P.M. on each day that college classes are conducted.     In the following pages will be discussing the Head Start program and the facilities around the area, the Florida Parishes. Head Start is a non-profit organization that helps pregnant woman and children ages 0 to age 5. Pregnant women and children 0 to age 3 are served through the Early Head Start Program. Children ages 3 to 5 years are served through Head Start. The programs are unique because they not only serve the children, but as well, they serve their families. The children are provided comprehensive services: health, education, mental health, and disability services, if they are needed. The program serves families by providing them with support, encouragement, parenting, and referrals to other agencies. It is much more than average daycare, that you would see. In recent years, although Head Start has been funded by our politicians, it does not typically get an increase in founding. Due to the increase in the cost to run the programs, Head Starts are being cut and having to make tough decision. Although the poverty rate is increasing, not as many children are being served. Jobs have also been cut in the programs, to lack of children now being served, due to these circumstances. Head Start services are needed and funding needs to be increased where children and their families can continue to get the full benefits that they need.     I had the opportunity to observe at the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center in Long Beach.
