Discussion
In what way is physical fitness related to body image?
Exercise and fitness activities help control body weight and help make your body more attractive. Exercise helps to tone muscles and shape your body.
In your opinion, what effect can advertisements seen in magazines and on television have on the way people see themselves physically?
In my opinion, advertisements and magazines affect people by convincing them to spend money on a magic pill, or a 2 minute workout plan to help them lose body fat and gain muscle. They praise good looking celebrities and fit individuals, this gives negative gestures towards their audience for seeming physically unfit.
Why is the word “personal” so important in a personal fitness class?
The word personal is very important because it is your own health and fitness, not someone else’s. You cannot exercise for another person.
Compare two people your age, one who is very fit and one who is rather unfit. Are there any differences in them besides physical fitness?
Someone who is very fit is usually happy, and outgoing. They have good self esteem because of their body image, and have a positive view on life. Someone who is unfit is generally unhappy and reserved. They have a really low self esteem because of their body image.
What is the relationship, if any, between body image and self esteem?
There is a strong relationship between body image and self esteem. If you are not satisfied with the way you look, your self esteem will most likely go down. If you are satisfied with the way you look, your self esteem will most likely go up.

How do Respiratory, cardiovascular, neuromuscular systems differ between physically fit and sedentary individuals? Overall a sedentary individual is unconditioned and if they perform an activity more strenuous than they are accustomed to, they run the risk of a myocardial infarction from a higher oxygen demand on the heart that the body can not compensate for. It creates an effect where women immediately go thru the comparison process on their own body image. “ In a recent meta-analysis, Groesz, Levine, and Murnen (2002) used 43 effect sizes from 25 studies, finding an overall effect size (d) of -.30, indicating that exposure to thin images had an adverse effect on body satisfaction when compared to exposure to control images” ( “Body Image, University of South Florida”1). The comparison is more likely to be with the “ideal” attractive women. It leads to creating a low self-rating of its own appearance. The body image dissatisfaction causes the women to change their minds on losing weight, change their eating habits and change their belief of their own body image. Obviously this is caused by the television shows, television commercials and…

This plays a huge role in how young girls perceive themselves. In the presentation by Dr. Sosin, she stated that the average model is 5”10 and 110lbs. This is what the world wants our young girls to see as the norm. She also stated that the real norm for girls is 5”4 and 145lbs. This is just another example of the lies that are fed to our daughters that causes them more stress than what they are already dealing with. Advertisements like this in my opinion are what leads to young girls having eating disorders and having strong issues with self-image and how they look. A lot of times these ads have them aiming for a goal that is unrealistic to obtain. The advertisement for young men could mean something altogether different. When watching the commercial the writer noticed that most of the men in the commercial did not have their shirts…

The way people look at us changes as we start to exercise more. People often get looked down on for living sedentary lifestyles and having a lot of body fat. Once you start working out, many people's perception of you may change. As your overall body fat decreases, people will also start to see you in another light. As for how much socially has changed for me, it doesn't seem to have had too many changes. Over time, as ones body visibly changes and becomes more healthy, people will look at you differently.…

In this era, both men and women are obsessed with beauty and obtaining perfect bodies to be accepted by society. The majority of the population can be found on social sites or watches numerous hours of television a year, which contain advertisements and product placement. The media is responsible for creating the idea of what body image and beauty standards are accepted. Body image plays a very important role in our society in shaping our identities. Advertising is regarded by Wernick (1991) as the fictive process of representation. With the purpose of generating a market demand, production and promotion are integrated. In other words, promotional culture tends to shape consumer’s behavior and desire through producing and presenting particular sign value to promote a product. In effect, an advertisement tells the masses the way to behave and encourages unhealthy behaviors, which has a negative impact. For instance, body image on billboards and magazines leads to an aesthetic that excessive thinness is an ideal of women’s body shape. Victoria’s Secret’s ‘Perfect Body Campaign’ produces an unrealistic ideal of women’s beauty, which becomes a standard to measure what is a perfect woman’s body.…

Aristotle, a great philosopher said that all humans are social by nature. And he’s proven right. Humankind had formed societies from the ancient times in order to survive, and these societies as time went by evolved to the society we live in today. A society that is competitive, materialistic and demanding. A society that accepts us only if we are beautiful, have a high position in a big company and drive a nice, shiny car. Of course this reality is perfectly illustrated through advertisements. It takes only a couple of minutes and channel changes on your television for you to be showered by advertisements of new car models or anti-aging superpower creams. And here rises the big question: Is this kind of advertising that shapes the stereotypes and the expectations of society or the other way around? Although some psychologists and marketing experts may claim that in order to attract consumers, advertisements use non-ethical and subliminal methods that promote stereotypes, advertising in reality is the reflection of our society’s beliefs, expectations, and value system.…
