Heroic Qualities In Luke's Journey
The Introduction:
Luke SkyWalker’s journey begins in Star Wars A New Hope during a long period of civil war. Rebel spaceships strike from a hidden base, winning their first victory against the Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies stole secret plans to the Empire’s DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.

Ordinary World:
Luke Starts his Adventure on his aunt Beru, and uncle Owen’s moisture farm on the desert planet of Tatooine. No Heroic qualities have been expressed at this point in Luke’s Journey, and really picks up later when the story develops into something deeper then it set out to be.

Call to Adventure:
Luke’s call to adventure starts when he finds a message from Princess Leia stored on R2-D2. In this part of

Luke still refuses his offer, but Luke returns home finding a brutal scene; his aunt, and uncle murdered, and home destroyed. In this part of his journey I see a lack of heroic qualities in Luke, but I see developing heroic qualities expressed by Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Mentor/Helper:
Obi-wan Kenobi is Luke Skywalker’s mentor and helper. Luke meets Obi-Wan after a run-in with Sand People chasing R2-D2 into the desert. Obi-Wan Kenobi explains about the Jedi, and the Force. He spent a great deal of time teaching Luke valuable lessons about the force/Jedi. Another step in Luke’s Journey where I see a lack of heroic qualities developing.

Crossing the Threshold:
Luke crosses the threshold when he leaves his home on Tatooine, and travels to the Mos Eisley Spaceport. With Obi-Wan's guidance and Luke's commitment to the journey see him through. In this step Luke expresses bravery, and courage where he is about to embark on a great journey. He doesn't know in this now, but he ends up saving the galaxy.

In classic mythology, the hero goes through a heroic journey; in modern mythology, the journey is no different. Luke Skywalker is the hero in “Star Wars: A New Hope” and goes through the three necessary phases in order to earn that title. A hero is someone or something who helps others with an honorable purpose, or a person who possesses traits that others could see as the traits of a role model. In my mind, Frodo Baggins holds these heroic characteristics and, in the end, made choices to assist the well-being of his companions. Frodo’s efforts display that he is concerned for the future of all living things and does not act simply based on his own wants. For instance, when Gandalf questions Frodo of the Ring’s prospect, Frodo chooses to eliminate it. Though he would be destroyed, as well as others, it proves later that he did not do it to benefit only himself. Furthermore, in a meeting discussing the Ring’s future, Frodo volunteers to bring it to the evil land of Mordor. Any…

Movies are always trying to duplicate what actually happened in real life. The directors have to read and learn about the specific time and the events that they want their movie to be based upon. During WWII, there were many critical moments that could be historically accurate or inaccurate. Empire of the Sun directed by Steven Spielberg, is a historically accurate movie because it depicts what is what like for a younger child to live in a concentration camp during the middle of a war. The movie is a true story based on the memories of J.G. Ballard who is portrayed as Jamie in the movie(Berardinelli 1).…

“Aren’t you a little short for a storm trooper?” (Lucas New Hope 40). Rings a bell, doesn't it? This is one of the many quotes and a memorable one from Princess Leia in George Lucas’s saga Star Wars. Lucas had created an all American myth and was the first to do it. His movie saga used every archetype known to man and was inspired by the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. Campbell’s book also had every archetype known to man in it. It affected an innumerable amount of people around the world. Lucas’s Star Wars saga even went further than the big screen by inspiring comics, video games, toys, and other merchandise making Lucas a billionaire. His first three movies he made in the saga are New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of The Jedi. In this Star Wars trilogy, George Lucas illustrates that the hero must be wounded either physically or emotionally to be open to spiritual knowledge and transformation. Leia’s wounds open her to love, Luke’s wounds open him to becoming a Jedi Knight, and Anakin Skywalker’s wounds open him to redemption. These transformations are marked by physical and emotional wounds.…
